The Houston Peace and Justice Center's annual Awards Banquet is on
Nov. 3. This seems like a long way off, but planning needs to start
now.
Some of the basic work has already been done (arranged for a venue,
chosen and contacted the keynote speaker, etc.), but the HPJC board
needs help and is having a planning meeting tomorrow, Thursday,
August 17, at 7:30 pm in the HPJC office (2990 Richmond Ave, 6th
floor, at the opposite end of the hall from where PAA has its monthly
meetings).
We would like a representative of each HPJC member organization
(including PAA) to participate in the planning so that it can be a
truly momentous event. Please let me know if you can help, and go to
this planning meeting to represent PAA.
The banquet is the major fund raiser for HPJC, and helps to support
all their activities, including how they support member organizations
(like PAA) as well as the community. The banquet also allows us to
honor some local people working for peace and justice, and hear a
prominent national figure speak (and who will also get an award).
This year, the national honoree and keynote speaker will be Father
Roy Bourgeois, who is founder of School
of the Americas Watch. We hope to tell people more about some of the
activities HPJC helps promote and fund, such as the children's Peace
Camp that had another successful run this summer. We want the
banquet to be fun as well as an opportunity to network with other
peace and justice activists and recognize a few of the leaders in the
movement.
Let me know ASAP if you can help, and if you can go to the meeting
Thursday evening.
Bill
