UNICEF: Children suffer from bias against women
Children's health, as well as families' poverty, are worsened by the unequal
rights between men and women seen in many homes around the world, UNICEF
says in a new report. Children are more likely to suffer from bad health in
families where women have less of a say in making decisions, UNICEF warns in its
new annual report on the state of the world's children. _BBC_

The oceans have been acting like giant storage heaters by trapping heat and
carbon dioxide. They might be bit of a time-bomb as they have been masking
the real effects of the carbon dioxide we have been releasing into the
atmosphere.

Annan: Lessons learned for the world
Kofi Annan, with less than three weeks to go at the helm of the United
Nations, in this commentary writes about the five major lessons he has learned
during his 10 years as the world's top diplomat that he says the global
community needs to learn. One lesson is that it is crucial, in an age of global
pandemics, nuclear proliferation and climate change, that we all work together to
enhance each other's security. _The Washington Post_

Profile: For Ban, a twisty road to UN chief post
Ban Ki-moon, the former South Korean foreign minister who on Jan. 1 succeeds
Kofi Annan as the head of the United Nations, is largely an unknown
character among the world's diplomats. In this profile of Ban, the 62-year-old is
described as "loyal and dependable," a man who, it turns out, got the
opportunity to become UN secretary-general partly because of a diplomatic snafu in his
past. _The New York Times_ (http://r.smartbrief

Reform should be focus of new UN chief, Bolton urges
Ban Ki-moon, the incoming United Nations secretary-general, should waste
little time before he tackles further reform efforts at the world body or the
opportunity may vanish, outgoing U.S. envoy John Bolton said. "The question is
whether Ban Ki-moon can take advantage of coming in fresh. It's the only
opportunity," Bolton said, arguing that despite some reforms accomplished, more
needs to be done. _The Scotsman (Edinburgh)/Reuters_

winner takes aim at profit-driven globalization
Countries should encourage local activists to balance out the spread of
large companies motivated by profit, Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus said Sunday as
he received the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. Yunus, who pioneered the microcredit
practice of granting small business loans to the poor, warned globalization
has disintegrated into a "free-for-all" where larger economies benefit at the
expense of weaker ones. _APTN/ClipSyndicate_

Commentary: Understanding drives hope for better health in poor world
Widespread media focus on the recent selection of Dr. Margaret Chan of China
to head the World Health Organization is part of a trend of increased
attention paid by the developed world to health issues affecting the world's
poorest, writes Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, in this
Washington Times commentary. HIV/AIDS has driven understanding of the disparities
in health between rich and poor countries, Fauci says, forwarding
opportunities to improve health overall in the developing world. _The Washington

Extent of humans' role in warming questioned in upcoming UN report
A report on climate change the United Nations plans to release next year
will say that mankind has had less effect on warming than previously believed,
the Daily Telegraph reports. It's virtually certain that humans are
contributing to global warming and that temperatures will continue to rise in coming
decades, but humans' role in the phenomenon may be somewhat smaller than
generally thought, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will report.

UN's Arbour urges rich countries to do more on poverty
Rich countries need to do more for poor countries, perhaps by diverting some
of the vast resources now going to military spending, Louise Arbour, the
United Nations' high commissioner for human rights, said Sunday. Arbour, marking
International Human Rights Day, said the UN is at risk of failing to meet
one of its Millennium Development Goals of cutting world poverty in half by
2015. _The Financial Express (Bangladesh)/Associated Press_

Pinochet leaves dark legacy
Gen. Augusto Pinochet, Chile's infamous former dictator, died Sunday,
leaving a legacy that allegedly includes widespread torture and killings of
political opponents during his reign between between 1973 and 1990. His death also
leaves incomplete several court cases that attempted to hold him responsible
for human rights violations allegedly committed under his regime. _Houston

Annan: UN failing on Darfur "horror"
The United Nations is failing in its promises to address genocide and war
crimes, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Friday in a speech to mark
International Human Rights Day. "Sixty years after the liberation of the Nazi death
camps, and 30 years after the Cambodian killing fields, the promise of 'never
again' is ringing hollow," Annan said. Blame for protracted negotiations to
get UN peacekeeping troops in place should be shared between those supporting
"abstract values of sovereignty" at the expense of families, Annan added.

Analysis: Lebanon struggling to avoid collapse
Neither Lebanon's struggling, Western-backed government nor the Hezbollah
supporters who over the weekend protested en masse in Beirut seem to have a
strong option for getting the country back on a productive course, the Los
Angeles Times reports in this analysis. Negotiators now are facing a challenge in
trying to produce a power-sharing agreement between the two sides that can
prevent Lebanon from collapsing, the paper writes. _Los Angeles Times_
