[PAA-Discuss] MLK Day march! -- Jan. 13

I like- no I love the idea of distributing anti shrub stuff too, but can we
collective look harder at the MLK message and come up with something that
impacts us as a race of beings?
I do agree that MLK was politically involved (probably what got him shot in
the end as he was beginning to rally the people- same thing with John Lennon
and more I won't name here) but in this day and time, it feels urgent that
we must band together and focus on saving this whole race as MLK was trying
to do.
There are many pieces to a puzzle, but let's put it together and demonstrate
the end picture, the dream, not point to the single piece that is the cause
du jour. Divided we fall, people. I do agree with Bill that peace was and
still is the dream. And I am very curious about the response to his inquiry
about various issues.

Just 2 more cents to throw in the kitty. Think about it.

I really like the idea of distributing anti-Bush flyers at the parade. I'm
willing to help.

I don't know whether bikes will be allowed, but I
asked last week why they were not having bands
(because the draw people, especially families of
those in the band) at the MLK march. I was told
that due to cost reasons, they were not going to
block the streets and have a real parade. I
think they're going to just march on the
sidewalks and then have a big event at the end of
the march, at McGregor Park. If you don't want
to march you can just come to the rally at the park.

But I'm really glad that Ada Edwards is
organizing this non-violent alternative to the heavily militarized MLK
parade.

Note that this event is NOT on MLK day. It will
be Saturday, January 13. More details are at http://www.wearethedream.org

I signed up a few days ago to register for the
event and to get on their e-mail list, but
haven't heard back anything from them yet. On
the web site, there was a notice that says
"Groups are encouraged to march with identifying
banner, signs, clothing, etc. All banners, signs,
printed material must be cleared by program
committee. No signs and/or chants that are
uniquely political or issue oriented will be
allowed in the march or rally." I wrote them
pointing out that MLK was very political and a
big advocate of issues like peace and
non-violence so why couldn't we bring signs about
these issues. I'll let you know when I get a response.

Should we plan to have a PAA entry in the
event? I should be a good opportunity for
networking and continuing towards MLK's
legacy. Of course, I'd like to have signs and
flyers promoting peace and whatever else seems appropriate there.

I'd also like to distribute flyers at the MLK
parade downtown, as we did this year with
distribution of 5000 flyers there, pointing out
how Bush & Cheney are destroying MLK's legacy and
why we should push for impeachment. But we have some time to think about
that.

Bill
