Dear Kris:
One thing you can do about the situation is support the soldiers who do resist with letters and donations for legal expenses. If soldiers resist en masse, knowing that citizens are behind them, the occupations may end. Even if that does not happen, we cannot leave these brave men and women hanging. Go to www.thankyoult.org, get the address of General Dubik and hand-write a letter asking him to cancel Watada's court martial. Then send the Hawaii's People Fund $10 for Watada's defense. If 3,000 people donated $10 each, he'd have enough for his basic defense.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Kain

I dont know if it would solve the problem to change the oath, but I certainly believe military personnel have the RIGHT and the DUTY to defy orders they are personally and morally opposed to especially if it involves the taking of human life. I seem to recall that military personnel take that oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and defend the country from ALL enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. We have a whole bunch of DOMESTIC homegrown terrorists sitting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They have endangered the entire world and are still walking around as free men and women. Whats up with that? Why arent they under arrest and languishing in a prison cell somewhere awaiting trial? I dont get this at all. Our military has a sacred DUTY to protect this country from ALL enemies. The members of the Bush administration are enemies of democracy and enemies of the United States of America. I dont get this. Why are they still walking around and making decisions that affect military servicemen (women) and their families as well as the global community?! Why havent the military service members laid down their weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan and refused to kill another human being? Am I being naïve? Do they continue to fight in order to stay alive? Do they still truly believe they are somehow doling out retribution for 9-11 or democratizing a people? Why dont they DEMAND to come back to the United States? Why dont they DEMAND their faux Commander in Chief be brought up on charges? I dont understand this at all.
The bottom line is this, Mikal: It is my belief that military personnel DO have a legal and moral obligation to refuse direct orders that they know to be illegal, immoral and against the laws of this country. I would say invading and occupying a sovereign nation that never posed a threat to the United States, never attacked anybody on our shores and had NO WMD and proved it had NO WMD is a FRIGGING WAR CRIME!!! My God, members of the U.S. government and the military are guilty of WAR CRIMES! People are walking around rationalizing this, and its all bullshit. People have lost their lives, their limbs, their infrastructure, their minds, their way of life etc. Are we okay we this? Somethings gotta give, and I mean now. The leadership of this country is EVIL to the max. The Constitution has been flushed, our civil rights and liberties have been stomped into the ground, the environment is being poisoned along with all of us, we are all going to hell in a hand basket while the jerk offs in Congress and the White House sit back and laugh all the way to their banks (who, by the way, are in collusion with the U.S. government). Id say were screwed, blued and tattooed.
Now, WHAT IN THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Kris

T]he Armys unwillingness thus far to seek any reasonable solution or outcome of this situation certainly has placed Lt. Watada into a position where he has little or no choice but to vigorously defend himself against charges that we submit are extravagant and unjustified, Seitz wrote.
The Army's stance on this has certainly publicized Lt. Watada's predicament, as well as drawing attention to the issue of whether or not military personnel have the rights to refuse to particpate in an illegal and/or immoral war. Pledging allegiance to one's Commander in Cheif is a requirement it is called "taking the oath". I have been told if any recruit refuses to "take the oath", they will immediately mustered out. I'd like to know if this is true, if anyone knows. If it is, it could be a very useful tool. It could also be revised to resolve the problem, couldn't it? The oath could possibly be revised so they pledge allegiance to their Commander in Chief, in accordance with their own morals and American Law.
What do you think? Do you think military personnel have the right and the obligation not to participate in wars they consider to be immoral and/or illegal and would it solve the problem to change "the oath"?
