What I mean by "no one wins":
I feel it's coming down to parsing the nuances involved with the question of "how can anyone be
pro-peace without being anti-war OR how can anyone be anti-war without being pro-peace?" Some of
us may feel that the answers are obvious but some may hold on to misperceptions about the "other
side'. Those misperceptions may be the reason that MrB is afraid of MFSO.
Once we open that can o worms we end up in a 'war of words' similar to that which erupts when
we're trying to understand the differences & similarities between those who are pro-life and those
who are pro-choice. As we've seen in recent years, both sides have stereotypical ideas about what
the other side really wants and we hear very little about both sides coming to common ground.
That's in spite of the fact that those of us with 3-digit I.Q.s can clearly see that both sides,
according to their own words at least, really want the same thing.
Ultimately, (cynicism alert) someone who has an ulterior, unstated motive will find a way to frame
the rhetoric to demonize those whose goals may sabotage the ulterior motive. That's what happened
in the abortion debate, that's what happened in the evolution debate, that's what happened in the
death penalty debate, that's what happened in the Israel/Palestine debate, that's what is
happening in the torture vs Geneva Convention debate; I'm afraid it will happen the same way if
this discussion is pushed to it's logical conclusion.
