What would you call the RRW? Readers speak.

.jpg> Revolting Repugnant Waste. Road to Ruinous War. Really, Really Warped.
These are just a few of the suggestions emailed by dozens of creative, and
in many cases, outraged, readers to the question we posed in our last news
update. We asked, what would YOU call the RRW? Officially, RRW is short for
<http://ga3.org/ct/kdxuMOS1QmPc/> Reliable Replacement Warhead, the
Department of Energy's plan to replace the aging W76 warhead that sits atop
Trident submarine-based missiles, and eventually to rebuild every nuclear
warhead in the arsenal. The program has provoked widespread skepticism,
informed by the work of Ploughshares Fund grantees, about the need for any
new warheads, and even greater concern about the impact the program will
have on the spread of nuclear weapons and prospects for global security.
Believing that the new warhead's innocuous-sounding name obscures its true
nature, we asked for your suggestions for a new moniker. Recasting the RRW
initials, readers came up with Rapaciously Radiating the World, Reward$ for
the Right Wing, and more. But most of you agreed that we need to start
calling it exactly what it is - a new hydrogen bomb. Wrote one respondent,
"The history of nuclear weaponry is filled with language that distorts
reality and sounds reasonable, safe, pallid, and uninteresting. We need to
change that by calling a spade an extraordinarily lethal shovel." Another
said, "This is nothing to be cute about...we need to call it exactly what it
is and publicize the destruction it could bring."
<http://ga3.org/ct/k1xuMOS1QmPd/> Daryl Kimball, president of the
<http://ga3.org/ct/ipxuMOS1QmPe/> Arms Control Association calls the RRW "a
bad solution in search of a problem," while another reader responded simply,
"KABOOM!"
