United for Peace and Justice Calls for Local Action in Aftermath of
Presidential Veto
Yesterday, the House/Senate conference committee agreed on the wording of a
bill on the supplemental funding for the war/occupation in Iraq. Before their
April recess both chambers of Congress passed bills with different language
and all of that was worked out in the conference committee. Most likely,
today or tomorrow the House will pass this new version of the bill and on
Thursday the Senate will pass it. From there it goes to the White House and the
President is expected to veto it.
UFPJ believes this is a critically important moment for the antiwar movement
to be heard and seen. In fact, on Thursday we will send an alert to our
national email list urging people to take action - action aimed at keeping the
pressure on Congress. In the face of a presidential veto, we do not want
Congress to fold! They need to stand up to George Bush and make it clear that the
war must end and all the troops must be brought home, now.
In addtion to giving people ideas for actions they can take as individuals
(writing letters to the editors of local papers, calling their members of
Congress, etc.) we also want to encourage people to participate in local public
activities. That's why we're contacting you now.
We know everyone is on overload, and usually you need more time to plan an
activity. But it is critically important that Congress hears from us - now is
not the time to buckle or give in. If your group can plan a local action that
would be great: a vigil in front of the local office of a member of
Congress, a banner drop, a presence in a populated or highly trafficked part of your
town, a rally or march. You know what's best for your locale, and what you
can pull off.
In the next day or two you might also hear that MoveOn, True Majority and
Working Assets are also calling for local actions in response to the
president's veto. If you know people in your area who are connected to those
organizations then please make an effort to work together. One thing to keep in mind:
we believe they will be focusing on their critique of the president's veto and
we would like to see much more of a focus on Congress and what comes next.
These messages do not have to be in conflict, but we do want to urge an
emphasis on keeping the heat on Congress.
In the message we send out on Thursday we will direct people to the
_calendar of actions on the UFPJ web site_
(http://unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=50) , calling special attention to actions planned in the aftermath of
the veto. Please be sure to post your local events and activities as soon as
you have them planned!
The alert on Thursday will also include talking points for calling in to
radio talk shows, and sample letters to the editor. We have to use every means
available to insert our message into the public debate on ending the
war/ccupation of Iraq.
Our message to Congress and Bush is clear:
We want all the troops home NOW
No more funding for this war!
