[PAA-Discuss] Antiwar League in Vermont advocates secession. Why not?

Yeah, the Republic of Texas people are scary. They're not antiwar, by any
means. They're the people in a crowd most likely to own a personal arsenal
too, and they think armed conflict with their neighbors is inevitable.
Actually, the Texas annexation documents allowed for Texas to be split up
into a total of five states, but that's now considered a curiousity and not
much more. The U.S. constitution (Article 4, Section 3) makes it clear that
states cannot be subdivided. I'm sure any effort to split up the state would
face a court showdown, and Texas would lose.
My boss wrote a story on our website when that news about the bomb-making
materials in East Texas got out. It was something like "We found the
WMD's--they're in East Texas."

While it sounds tempting at this point in history, it would be a dangerous
mistake to make.
There is already an organization of separatists who call themselves "The
Republic of Texas" who have been advocating for secession for many years.
Trouble is, they're just as much criminals as the criminals we're trying to
overthrow.
R.o.T. consists of white supremacists, extreme religious fanatics, soldier
of fortune style militiamen, the same Libertarians who hate the federal govt
for just HAVING laws, and the same kind of people who have been voting for
Bush since 2000.
A few years ago there was a news story that was totally ignored by the
corporate broadcasters about a gang of R.o.T. folk who were arrested for
having some MAJOR bomb-making materials and plans to use it. These guys are
an all-white, all-christian domestic terrorist cell of the same mold as Tim
McVeigh and absolutely not to be trusted with political control of the State
of Texas.
If I don't trust the creeps in Washington, then I won't trust the creeps in
the R.o.T. any better.

Much like the US Declaration of Independence, the Antiwar League sets out
some fantastic reasons why secession is justified. Maybe we should do the
same thing. I think when Texas joined the union it reserved the right to
split up into six states, each of which would have two senators. But this
seems like an even better idea. In any case, I hope the Vermonters can pull
it off, or at least publicize the possibility. That would send a fantastic
message. What a concept! Check it out at this link:
