Friday May 26 Lunch at Fudruckers.
Don't forget that our weekly luncheon is at Fudruckers on NASA Rd1 at 12:00.
Great food. Great company!
Sunday May 27 Memorial Day Observance.
The Houston chapters of Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, and
CodePINK are lead sponsers of a Memorial Day Observance, May 27 to 29, to
honor all casualties from the ongoing Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
This is a great event. All members should try to take time to help setting
up the flags, reading names, or visiting the memorial.
Volunteers are needed to place flags and read names beginning at 10am
Sunday, 27 May and until the over 3800 labeled flags are placed and names
read. Come anytime on the 27th to help or during the following two days to
view the flag memorial.
This event will take place at Hermann Circle Dr. The display will include
memorials to Iraq and Afghan civilian casualties, US military casualties
from Iraq, US military casualties from Afghanistan, casualties from Texas,
and a section for the over 100 veterans who have committed suicide since
returning from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars. For information call or email

Sunday June 10 Billie Carr Institute Environmental Summit 2007 Environmental
Summit
What: Environmental Summit
When: Sunday, June 10, 1-5 p.m.
Where: University of Houston Main Campus, University Center
Who: All activists concerned about the Houston region environment
What's happening with the Houston region environment? How bad is it? The
people of Houston suffer the ill effects day in and day out and seem unable
to make their voices heard by most elected officials. What can we do?
Come to the Environmental Summit on Sunday, June 10 at the University of
Houston's Main Campus to find out what's happening, who's working for the
people of Houston, what you can do, and how we can all work together.
The event, sponsored by the Harris County Democrats progressive organization
and the Billie Carr Institute, will feature a keynote by Houston Mayor Bill
White and introductory comments by well-known environmental activist, Jim
Blackburn. In addition to Dr. Stephen Klineberg of Rice University
discussing survey research about environmental opinions, a variety of
environmental groups and political groups will offer comments about
environmental goals, issues and key challenges in the near future.
The event's objectives are to broadly increase knowledge of environmental
issues and introduce organizations to political activists of Harris County
and surrounding areas. We hope to substantially increase interaction between
people active in environmental issues and partisan politics. Ultimately,
we'd like to plan future interactions for the coming election season.
Houston Region Sierra Club, GHASP (Galveston-Houston Association for Smog
Prevention), Mothers for Clean Air, Citizen's Environmental Coalition, AND
Harris County Democrats, Bay Area New Democrats (BAND), and other Democratic
organizations are expected to participate.
Organizations are encouraged to invite their members and to staff tables
with literature throughout the event in the main ballroom of UH's University
Center.
