I used to volunteer in the literacy tutoring program, when they had one...I
am pretty sure they don't anymore.
First of all, do you have their inmate number? You have to have that on any
communication you send to them. If you don't have it, talk to a member of
their family or their attorney, and get it from them. You should address it
to "John Doe, TDCJ Inmate Number 123456" and then the unit name and address.
You can get that from the prison unit itself.
You can send a letter, you can send a card, don't send anything with
staples, don't send anything with stickers. You can send newspaper
clippings, but if they are controversial (i.e., political, or have anything
to do with criminal justice issues), they won't be delivered, they'll be
taken out of the mailing.
You can send books, too, as long as they are sent either from the publisher
or from an approved bookstore. And I forgot to mention--if they are on an
approved list. It's amazing what is NOT.
They want to make it just as difficult as possible to correspond with
friends or loved ones, believe me.
