There Is Movement In Congress To Restrain The Runaway F.C.C. If We
Will Support It
Yes, we know there is a holiday coming up fast.
But despite mounting and unanimous public opposition, FCC Chairman
Kevin J. Martin is trying to rush through essentially the same
further media consolidation into the hands of fewer and fewer giant
corporations, which was overturned by public pressure in 2003.

A bipartisan bill has already been introduced in Congress, The Media
Ownership Act of 2007 (S.2332), to stop this rash and harmful action.
At a public hearing (with the bare minimum advance legal notice) in
Seattle on Nov. 9, presumptively to hear citizen input, Martin turned
a deaf ear to a thousand protesting voices, and announced the next
business day he was going to plow ahead with his destructive plan.
FCC Commissioners Adelstein and Copps were appalled at Martin's
obliviousness to the public interest, aiming to push through his
gutting of current rules by December 11, just a couple weeks off.
S.2332 would start by requiring a full and fair 90 days for the
public to comment on any such proposed rule changes. It would also
require protections for localism and diversity of ownership,
including female and minorities.
The one click action page above will send your personal message to
all your members of Congress, and each every one of the FCC
Commissioners, with the subject "Stop further media consolidation by
passing S.2332". At the same time you can send your personal comments
only as a letter to the editor of your nearest local daily newspaper
if you like.
OpEdNews Helping To Mobilize Against The FCC
Because of the extreme urgency of this action, OpEdNews has put out a
call to all its writers to submit action stories, which link to
additional action pages on this issue. In this one we learn more
about current FCC chairman Kevin Martin, that is he is nothing more
than a plant from the Bush-Cheney transition team, a general council
for Bush's 2000 Presidential campaign.

Please read this article and watch for others is this action news
series.
We only have until December 11th to make the biggest public record
possible of the opposition of the American public to this bum rush to
a virtual media antitrust calamity. We need every possible voice to
strengthen the hands of Congress, with clear bipartisan support, to
stop the FCC from totally disregarding their obligation to serve the
public interest. We need to make the strongest public record of this
despite the deliberate and hostile short sheeting of the public
comment period.

It is no coincidence that the quality of our news, the life blood of
our democracy has deteriorated in direct inverse proportion to the
concentration of ownership of our media into fewer and fewer greedy
hands. It is no surprise that the level of political debate and
discourse in our country has degenerated into trivia about diamonds
and pearls, just as corporate puppet masters have taking greater
control of what questions are allowed to be addressed. It is no
wonder that the most worthy of presidential candidates are
systematically marginalized to try to con the people out of their own
free choice, with big media kingpins deciding for us who has a chance
to win and who does not.
This will be our only chance to stop it.
Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed
to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.
