For those of you who'd like to do some freeway blogging on I-45 north of downtown Houston (for people living in US Rep. Brady's and Poe's districts), or even if you just have a few minutes to make a phone call, you have a big opportunity -- this week only.
See below for Herb's note on S-CHIP. The vote to override W's veto is likely to come up on Friday. There will probably be enough votes in the Senate to override, but the House looks close. Even right-winger extraordinaire Sen. Hutchison plans to vote for children and to override the veto. But Congressmen Kevin Brady and Ted Poe are indicating they'll support W, and need to be reminded what pro-family really means. We need to encourage people to call them and tell them to vote to override.
If you'd like to help -- before Friday -- see Herb's note below, and check out the suggestions for freeway blogging & signs we always have on the PAA web site at http://www.paa-tx.org/freeway_blogging (link is always on our home page near the bottom in case you misplace this note). Herb's already scouted out good places for freeway blogging on I-45 north.
Contact Don Cook at 713-705-5594, or Herb (e-mail address below) if you'd like to help. As always, our garage (near Hobby Airport) is an activist sign making laboratory, is stocked with cardboard, paint, and brushes, and available to whoever wants to come over and make signs for worthwhile causes like this.
Whether you can help with freeway blogging or not, if you live in Poe's or Brady's districts, please CALL THEM before Friday and tell them to support children and families and to vote to overide W's veto on S-CHIP. If you have friends who live in their districts and who support S-CHIP, please ask them to call, too.
You can call Congress toll free at any of these numbers:
800-828-0498
800-459-1887
800-614-2803
Just tell the operator which rep you want to speak with. It only takes a minute or so to call.
thanks--
Bill

>(holding up signs on a freeway overpass)
>
>WHEN: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week from 5 to 7 p.m.
>
>WHY: Bush vetoed the re-authorization of the SCHIP program (State Children's Health Insurance Program). A vote to override the veto is coming up in the U.S. House of Representatives Friday. We need to put pressure on Houston-area Representatives Kevin Brady and Ted Poe, both of whom to date have opposed proper funding of SCHIP.
>
>WHERE: An overpass over I-45 heading north (toward their districts). The overpass is at Cottage St., which is the first overpass north of the N. Main exit not far from downtown. Coming north on I-45, exit at N. Main and stay on the service road a little way until you reach Cottage St. There is on-street parking on Cottage on both sides of the freeway.

>SIGNS: Make them BIG (letters 1 foot high), so the words need to be few. Here are some suggestions:
>
>BRADY AND POE: WHY VOTE AGAINST CHILDREN'S HEALTH?
>
>BRADY AND POE: YOU HAVE FED. HEALTH INSURANCE. WHY NOT KIDS?
>
>BRADY AND POE: WILL YOU VOTE "NO" TO KIDS?
>
