Dr. Marcia Bourgin Baker, Professor Emeritus, Atmospheric Sciences and Earth
and Space Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, will review the
scientific basis for the conclusion that human beings are modifying the
world's climate. She will then discuss projections for future climate change
and the goal we must achieve to avoid dangerous or irreversible climate
change. Dr. Baker has a PhD in Physics and is a fellow of the Royal
Meteorological Society, the American Meteorological Society, and the
American Geophysical Union.

Dr. Bob Edgar is the the President and CEO of Common Cause, a nonpartisan
nonprofit advocacy organization founded as a vehicle for citizens to make
their voices heard in the political process and to hold their elected
leaders accountable to the public interest.

Dr. Edgar served as general secretary of the National Council of the
Churches of Christ in the USA, the leading U.S. organization in the movement
for Christian unity. Under his leadership, the Council is focusing its
energies on major initiatives in the areas of overcoming poverty, protecting
the environment, fostering interfaith understanding, and building
international peace. 

An active volunteer, Dr. Edgar serves on the boards of several
organizations, including Independent Sector, the National Coalition for
Health Care and the National Religious Partnership for the Environment. 

Dr. Edgar received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lycoming College,
Williamsport, Pa., and a Master of Divinity degree from the Theological
School of Drew University, Madison, N.J. He holds four honorary doctoral
degrees.

Frances "Sissy" T. Farenthold, former Texas Legislator, past President of
the Rothko Chapel, and dedicated human rights activist, will be joined by
distinguished guests in two informal dialogues focused on critical current
issues this month.

Ms. Farenthold was a member of the Texas Legislature from 1968-1972 and ran
for Governor of Texas in 1972. A trailblazer, Ms. Farenthold holds the
distinctions of being the first woman nominated as the Democratic candidate
for Vice-President of the United States and the first woman President of
Wells College, Aurora, NY. She is a former board member of the Mexican
American Legal Defense Foundation and of the Texas Advisory Board U.S.
Commission on Civil Rights. She currently serves on the Board of Directors
for the Institute for Policy Studies. She is a graduate of Vassar College
and the University of Texas School of Law.

Dialogue on Current Immigration Laws: Families Torn Apart

Farenthold will converse with internationally respected immigration attorney
Charles C. Foster and Scalabrinian lay brother Mateo Luison. Charles Foster
heads Tindall & Foster's immigration law practice group and serves as vice
chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership's World Trade Supervisory Board,
honorary consul general for the Kingdom of Thailand, chairman of the Asia
Society Texas Center, and on the Houston Committee of the Council of Foreign
Relations. Brother Mateo belongs to the Scalabrinian Congregation of the
Missionaries of St. Charles in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The Scalabrinians live
in communities with immigrants and migrants in 24 countries and provide five
shelters in Mexico and Guatemala. Translating for Brother Mateo will be
Nestor Rodriguez, Professor and Chair of Sociology and Co-Director of the
Center for Immigration Research at the University of Houston.

Dialogue on The Military Commissions Act: Undermining Foundations of
American Democracy

Ms. Farenthold will be joined by Houston defense attorney Mike DeGeurin and
Assistant Federal Public Defender Thomas Berg. DeGeurin is a leading
national trial attorney and has tried over 200 state and federal cases. He
has been named Outstanding Criminal Defense Lawyer of Texas by the State Bar
of Texas, Attorney of the Year by the Harris County Criminal Lawyers
Association, and one of the National Law Journal Top 50 Lawyers Under 50.
Tom Berg is the First Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Southern
District of Texas and served as military legal advisor (JAG) in Guantanamo
Bay. Berg served as a military prosecutor in the U.S. Army during Desert
Shield/Desert Storm and more recently in Bosnia.

Author and freelance writer Anthony Arnove will touch upon the human impact
of the Iraq war, the real reason for the war and the case for withdrawal.
Anthony Arnove is the author of Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal, with a
foreword by Howard Zinn, published in January 2007. He is also the editor of
Iraq Under Siege: The Deadly Impact of Sanctions and War; Terrorism and War,
a collection of post-9/11 interviews and Voices of a People's History of the
United States.

An activist based in Brooklyn, he is a member of the National Writers Union
and writes regularly for ZNet.
