(Folks -- I had to enter the body in Cornyn's email
form menu. You can't let just anybody write you
without a security screen, you know.}

Senator John Cornyn
Washington, DC

Senator:

Thank you so very much for boldly taking the floor of
the Senate to condemn the "swiftboating" of General
Petraeus by the highly partisan MoveOn.org. These
off-the-books organizations are incredibly transparent
in their motives and affiliations. It's a wonder
they're allowed to warp our political system under the
guise of freedom of speech.

Texans can trust that you are the model of consistency
when it comes to expressing your outrage over 527
groups recklessly attacking someone's character,
especially someone who has served in our nation's
armed forces. We know you would never repeat such an
attack or be party to any effort to impugn the
character or record of an active duty service person
or veteran. I know you would be the first to loudly
proclaim your disgust if a 527 organization were to
belittle the achievements of a Bronze Star or Purple
Heart veteran or ridicule the sacrifice of a
paraplegic former serviceman (who literally gave his
limbs in combat) for cheap political advantage during
an election campaign.

What is even more admirable is how you managed to
budget time to take this important ceremonial
amendment, considering how busy our Congress is with
the mundane issues of the day. While 90 to 100 of our
soldiers perish in Iraq each month, and the Iraqi
civilian death toll approaches a quarter of a million,
you somehow still found the time to bemoan the
atrocity of an Internet ad and a single page of the
New York Times. Your keen sense of duty to Texas and
America is unparalleled.

Were it not for your bravery and determination, we
never would have seized and dismantled Saddam
Hussein's nuclear arsenal, located and subdued his
weapons of mass destruction, rebuilt Iraq's
infrastructure, and liberated the Iraqi people and
kept them safe from sectarian strife. How could any
Texan fail to take pride in your effort to stand tall
by setting aside the affairs of state to complain
about a newspaper ad?

I look forward to your continued valor on the Senate
floor. Perhaps you could take on those Burger King
commercials. The King is kind of creepy and often the
message doesn't make any sense.
