Congo Crisis: Give a Damn
5.4 million people dead. The number is staggering—the circumstances, far
more so. As the enormity of this human tragedy remains overlooked, the IRC
issues our latest mortality survey. In this _special report_
(http://ga3.org/ct/md27YQ5194wC/congo_crisis) , learn how the IRC is working to raise alarms, stop
the terrible toll and bring urgent aid to Congo's survivors. Photo: Marcus

January 1933:
BIRTH OF THE IRC
As we observe our 75th anniversary this year, IRC president George Rupp
plans to blog about one moment from our rich history each month. Read on to find
out how Albert Einstein played a part in our founding:
In January 1933, Adolf Hitler, the head of the Nazi party, became chancellor
of Germany. Within two months, the Nazis had gained virtually total control
of the country and had begun what would be a 12-year nightmare eventually
engulfing the entire world.
Although much of the world greeted the Nazi takeover with indifference or
apathy, some people were alert to what was happening and the threat it
represented.
In July 1933, a committee of 51 prominent Americans was established in New
York at the request of Albert Einstein. The Americans included intellectuals,
artists, and members of the clergy...

Essential Relief: Kenya Emergency
At work in Kenya for over a decade, the IRC was poised to act swiftly last
month when violence suddenly erupted from beneath the country’s usual calm,
forcing people to flee their homes in an instant. Over 250,000 Kenyans have
been uprooted, escaping with nothing, finding some scant shelter, trying to
scrape by and facing growing danger. Today, the IRC’s emergency teams continue to
help, expanding our response, supplying essential relief and working to stop
the spread of disease.

"Way Too Long": Violence Against Women
If you’ve been following women’s advocate Ann Jones’ journey with women in
war zones, you know that big changes have been taking place in small villages
across West Africa. The IRC project puts cameras in the hands of women who
have too long suffered at the hands of men who abuse them. In documenting
their lives, these women work together to question, learn and fight for their
rights. Their powerful story continues in Liberia, where Ann is posting updates
and photos on Mondays and Thursdays into February.
