As voters head to the polls today and all eyes are on Tsunami Tuesday, there is another issue that is deserving of our attention. 
This week, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act is up for reauthorization -- a bill that provides health care access to more than 1.8 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. 
Your help is needed to make sure this vital act is renewed and improved. 
Take a minute to tell your Senators to reauthorize this program. Call 1-800-828-0498.
Read more about the Indian Health Care Improvement Act here. For 10 years, Tribal Leaders from across this nation have been working to update and modernize the Indian health care delivery system. Here are some quick facts:
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act will: - Modernize and improve Indian health care services and delivery- Address the behavioral and mental health and well-being of Indian communities- Allow for long term care such as assisted living and in-home care for the Indian elders The Improvement Act will address these health disparities:- Infant mortality rate is 150 percent greater for Indians than that of Caucasian infants- Indians are 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes- Indians are 7.7 times more likely to die from alcoholism- Suicide for Indians is 2 1/2 times higher than the national average- Suicide is the #2 cause of death for Indian youth
Contact your Senators today at 1-800-828-0498. Urge them to vote YES to provide greater health care access to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
