[PAA-Discuss] FW: Political Joke

Lee makes a really good point, or several of them. When I
joint-ventured, the other general contractor had a laborer who had
been with him for almost twenty years. We talked a lot and he finally
admitted to me that he had been working for this Houston-area general
contractor all this time on someone else's social security account,
using the name of a man who had died in his childhood. By that time,
this fellow--who was also a forklift operator, truck driver, and
general gopher for the boss--was making almost 25K a year. I said to
him--don't you realize, you will never get a dime of that money you've
been paying in all this time? And he said, sure, but he didn't think
he had a choice. He also told me there were hundreds of people he had
met in his career in the trade who were just like him--and I believe
that. No doubt.

Everyone who buys items at the store pays taxes. Everyone who rents an
apartment pays taxes. And people like this man pay taxes that end up
subsidizing us, not the other way around. You don't hear the GOP'ers
talking about that.

And I might remind people who don't know--I'm illegal. My family got
off a boat in Indianola, Texas, in the late 1830's. No papers. No
immigration office. No nothing. I sure hope no one decides to send me
back to Germany at this late date.
