Summary: Help create the leading edge of the labor movement in Texas! The Houston Organization of Public Employees (HOPE) is currently seeking multiple positions talented Organizers and a Community/Political Organizer to help build a employee labor movement. This campaign is part of HOPE's innovative citywide program to organize workers and their communities across the city of Houston. The Houston Organization of Public Employees (HOPE) is a collaboration of two international organizations SEIU and AFSCME. This partnership brings AFSCME’s historic reputation and SEIU’s organizing drive together to build the foundation of a strong public sector union.
Organizer Job Description & Experience:
RESPONSIBILITIES
•Identify and develop workplace leaders
•Create leadership and activist structure in work sites
•Recruit members
•Work in a team setting to develop and implement comprehensive campaign strategy.
JOB QUALIFICATION:
•Excellent communication and listening skills •Creativity and good judgment •Patience •Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences •Commitment to justice for working people •A willingness to work long and irregular hours •A valid drivers license, car •Personal discipline and organization •Previous experience in campus, community, faith-based, labor, and/or political organizing a plus • Will train qualified candidates.
Community Political Organizer Job Description:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Create leadership and activist structure to engage in community and political campaigns
•Strengthen community and political relationships in support of HOPE
•Oversee member-led Community Committee, developing member leaders and organizing major community volunteer activities engaging member leaders
•Train members and staff to build relationships with community leaders and elected officials; develop organizing campaigns to support those relationships.
•Support growth and collective bargaining activities with political and community organizing.
•Work in a team setting to develop and implement comprehensive campaign strategy.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
• Excellent communication and listening skills
• Previous experience in campus, community, faith-based, labor, and/or political organizing a plus
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, empower and retain volunteers and member leaders
• Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain relationships with community organizations and coalitions
• Willingness to work “campaign” hours
• Creativity and good judgment; Personal discipline and organization
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences
• Commitment to justice for working people
•A valid drivers license, car
