I tried to sign this petition against the Peru Free Trade Agreement,
but I couldn't sign it. I got some Internet Explorer page saying "This
page is not available." I think this may be a right-wing conspiracy. I
think my network may be stifling free speech.

Subject: [PAA-Discuss] Tell Obama People over Profits - End Police
Violence in Peru
June 2009
Early in the morning last Friday, hundreds of Peruvian Indigenous
people blockaded a road in protest of new laws prompted by the US-Peru
Free Trade Agreement. The laws opened Indigenous lands to massive oil
drilling, mining, industrial agriculture and logging. Moreover, these
laws had been negotiated and finalized without the consent of
Indigenous Peoples - in direct contravention of the UN Declaration on
the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia refused to listen to the protesters'
demands, repeatedly citing the US-Peru FTA in his refusal to repeal the
new laws. Facing unwavering opposition, he turned to violence.
At 5:30am, on June 5, the Peruvian government ordered the police force
to attack, and the result was swift and deadly. As many as 25
Indig
enous people were killed and dozens more injured, as the police
opened fire into the crowd from the ground and from helicopters.
During his campaign, President Obama supported voiced support for the
US-Peru Free Trade Agreement (FTA), asserting that, "We have to stand
for human rights, and we have to make sure that violence isn't being
perpetrated against workers who are just trying to organize for their
rights. Which is why for example I supported the Peruvian Free Trade
Agreement, which was a well-structured agreement."
The tragic developments of the past few days have clearly shown that
the US-Peru FTA fails to offer sorely needed human rights protections.
In the name of the FTA, Peruvian authorities have used extreme police
violence against peaceful Indigenous protesters.
Sign the petition and tell President Obama that the rights - and lives
- of people are more important than the profits of multi-national
corporations.
Know people who want to support human rights? Forward this message to
your family and friends.
