Subject: Sad News: Gov. Perry Vetoed the TV Recycling Bill

Despite its broad support from TV manufacturers, environmental groups, local
governments and lawmakers from both parties, Governor Perry has vetoed the
TV TakeBack Bill, HB 821. We are shocked and saddened by this veto - this
bill had no opposition and passed overwhelmingly in the House and
unanimously in the Senate.

HB 821 would have provided Texans free, convenient recycling for obsolete
televisions. Please call Governor Perry and leave a message voicing your
disappointment: click here to take action!

Another way you can help is to write a letter to the editor of your local
newspaper. The best way to ensure that this kind of short-sighted veto does
not happen again in the future is to spread the word to all Texans. Click
here to send a letter! <http://www.texasenvironment.org/handy_tools.cfm>
Points in your letter to the editor could include:

  - Your own personal story about attempting to recycle your old TV
  - Need for recycling after the digital switch
  - Toxic materials in TVs
  - Cost to taxpayers and local governments
  - Loss of jobs in the electronics recycling industry
  - Public health impacts of lead and other toxins in water sources
  - Availability of e-waste recycling in your community

Now, TCE is working on federal legislation to stop the exporting of toxic
e-waste to developing nations. Tomorrow evening, June 23, PBS will broadcast
a Frontline special report on e-waste dumping overseas. Click here for
details <http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/ghana804/> , and watch if
you can!
