DHS Should Release Its Report on Rightwing Extremism?

Recent acts of domestic terrorism have made clear that law enforcement agents and the public must have the best possible information about potential threats.

In the wake of the murder of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas and Stephen T. Johns at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, it's time for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to finalize and publish its "Rightwing Extremism" report.

In April, the DHS released a valuable report entitled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment." The report was met with outrage from right wing groups, many of whose activities were not even mentioned or alluded to in the report, but who found protesting the report to be a useful political stunt.

DHS pulled the report over the trumped up "controversy" promising to revise it. But these recent acts of domestic terrorism have made clear that law enforcement agents and the public must have the best possible information about potential threats -- no matter how much outcry there may be from some Far Right groups.

Radical Right groups' bizarre eagerness to equate themselves with domestic terrorists is puzzling, since the report only focused on violent, racist, anti-Semitic and anti-government extremists.

A coalition of some of America's largest Religious Right groups -- acting under the name No Political Profiling -- released an ad that claimed the DHS report, "declared law-abiding citizens who express their First Amendment Rights as: 'the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.'"

In reality, the report says, "DHS/I&A assesses that lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States."

And in reaction to the report, the Liberty Counsel -- started by the late Jerry Falwell -- created a number of satirical ID cards to be sold and distributed which proclaimed "Proud to be a Right-Wing Extremist."

In the last days and weeks we've seen some of the DHS report's findings coming to eerie fruition. DHS should not delay any further the finalization and release of this report over the antics and exploitations of Religious Right groups seeing a fundraising opportunity.
