Award Honors Dr. Murhabazi Namegabe for Rescuing Child Soldiers in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist Paul Salopek Will Speak on "Congo's
Invisible War"
The Rothko Chapel will honor Dr. Murhabazi Namegabe for his courageous
efforts to rescue child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a
public ceremony on Sunday, October 25 at 3 p.m. Paul Salopek, who won a
Pulitzer Prize for his reporting from Africa, will be the featured speaker.
Seating for the program is first come, first serve.
Immediately following the program, the audience is invited to enjoy wine
and hors d'oeuvres on the plaza with Dr. Namegabe, Paul Salopek, and the
board of the Rothko Chapel.
Guided by founder Dominique de Menil, the Rothko Chapel established the
award in 1986 to commemorate the life and honor the sacrifice of Óscar
Arnulfo Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador. A vocal advocate for the poor and
oppressed in El Salvador and beyond, Archbishop Romero was murdered by an
assassin from the repressive forces while he was saying Mass on March 24,
1980. The Óscar Romero Award recognizes an individual or organization whose
selfless courage and commitment to human rights have made a profound
difference to the human race.
Dr. Murhabazi Namegabe
The 2009 Óscar Romero Award Ceremony is
graciously underwritten in part by
Lannan Foundation and Houston Endowment.
The Rothko Chapel is funded in part by a grant from the
City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
