Thank you , Beth , for this great post .

http://www.nhgazette.com/2010/03/26/dirty-fing-hippies-were-right/

It seems to me that the demise of the "flower children"

was partially ( at least ) socially engineered .

A huge group of people were on the brink of creating

a brand new society based on a new kind of bartering economics,

vegetarian cuisine , communal type living, local indigenous products,

making love- not war ,  holistic and homeopathic healing arts ,

and a media that emphasized the creative, non-consumer based, honest ,

caring for mother earth cultures .

All of a sudden ( around 1980 is when I first really noticed the ramping up

of a change ) , a NEW type of media became apparent to me .

World news was handled in a more "sanitary" fashion . Pot smokers had

been sentenced to long prison terms and growers became less visible .

A stereotype of the dullard pot-smoker became inculcated in viewer's minds .

Heavy Metal replaced "psychedelic".. Altamount was proclaimed the

"End of an Era ".  Cocaine began being imported by the CIA in huge amounts .

It became the new "cool" party favor . Single malt scotch replaced good

vinticultural selections for beverage choice. Aids was "unleashed" in Africa

and then the "gay" populations. Making money replaced making love and

made the "make love not war" crowd obsolete. A focus on corporate success

was glorified and the small, individual business owner became more of an

oddity.   The film , Why We Fight , had some very good points in it , one being

that from the original Military-Industrial-Complex that Eisenhower spoke of ,

two new elements of control were brought into place .....the Media and finally,

the Think Tank.

All that being said , I imagine our generation did the best we could .

To listen to The Who , it sounds like we got fooled .  Not many of us on this

list did.  But a whole lot of our brethren and sisters did .  Fortunately, now we have

the damage of about 30 years to work with.  The newest generation now seems

either totally apathetic , apolitical or just downright uninformed for

the most part.  But there is a gigantic and growing number of the newest

generation that is seeing that the f'ing hippies had it right.  This makes me

smile and gives me hope to keep working for positive, meaningful and

"make love not war" , flower giving , tree-hugging, non-violent demonstrating

Peace activism.
