Subject: Fact Sheet? 11/17 Bush book protests

Would one of you be able to turn the following into a "Media Packet-Fact Sheet" and bring some to the Wednesday AM protest at Barnes & Noble & GIVE TO ANY MEDIA workers who might show up, camera operators, reporters, etc?

1. In 1991, the bombing of Iraq resulted in the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure (e.g. drinking water and sewage treatment plants, power generating facilities, dams and reservoirs), the destruction of sources of food such as fish ponds, seed banks and date palms, and which resulted in the death of tens of thousands innocent Iraqi citizens, many of them children.

2. The embargo on Iraq which, along with the destruction of the nation's infrastructure from the 1991 attack, resulted in the death of over 500,000 Iraqi children under 5 years of age by 1998.

3. The U.S. massacre of the Iraqi army as it retreated from Kuwait in 1991 (the Highway of Death). Tens of thousands were killed. This massacre violated the Geneva Convention of 1949, Common Article 3, which outlaws the kiling of soldiers who are "out of combat".

4. The illegal and unnecessary invasion of Iraq by the U.S. led "coalition of the willing" in 2003. Again, the electrical and water systems were destroyed. U.N. weapons inspectors had verified that there were no WMD, and there was no al Qaeda in Iraq until the U.S. occupation. This invasion resulted in the death of tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens. The Lancet medical journal reported over one million dead. The war also resulted in millions of refugees both inside and outside the country.

5. The destruction of Iraqi antiquities, cultural sites, libraries, hospitals and schools during the war.

6. The dispersal of depleted uranium in Iraq which is believed to have resulted in babies being deformed when they were born and many more cases of leukemia and other cancers than in the years before the wars.

7. U.S. Civilian Administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, pushed through Public Law 150 that privatized many services and industries. This law is still in force and the U.S. has awarded contracts to several oil companies to pump Iraq's oil.

Houston activists to protest G.W. Bush book signing event

Bush book bash

U.S. Invasion and Occupation of Iraq
Immoral, Illegal and Unnecessary

November 17, 2010 Houston--When George W. Bush comes to Houston to sign his book for friends at Barnes and Noble bookstore, Wednesday, November 17th, 8:00-10:30am, some Houston foes will protest, demanding accountability and justice for the lies he told the world. Bush will be shamed with an Iraqi-journalist-style "shoe-in", with a theatrical skit as demonstrators toss shoes, boots, and sandles onto a life-size Bush cardboard bouncer doll, then pile up with shoes representing the deaths caused by his administration during eight years of disaster and call for his arrest as a war criminal.

"Bush's new book, Decision Points, could easily be retitled: Torture? Yes: In Contempt of International Law," quipped Madeleine Crozat, Houston Codepink.

In his book, the ex-President tries to justify the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. The American people will not allow the Bush or the Obama administration to "turn the page" on Iraq. How will history view the illegal invasion of Iraq and war crimes committed by the U.S. Government?

"We must never forget the needless deaths of thousands of U.S. military personnel during the war and the serious injuries sustained by thousands more, the billions of dollars wasted on this war which could have been used to enhance the lives of people in the U.S., and the billions of dollars that have just disappeared", said Lee Loe, Editor of the Houston Peace News.

Houston Peace and Justice Center representative, David Atwood claims, "Once people read the book, they should be outraged that Bush callously admits to a host of acts, ranging from invasion in Iraq and Afghanistan, to torture of detainees, such as waterboarding, the Patriot Act and other matters that should not be glossed over, but warrant further investigation and prosecution.

                                                                                        #######
