Subject: A special election message
Please support a bright light in Congress
A big problem in Congress is that we have too many 5-watt bulbs sitting in 100-watt sockets.
The good news, however, is that we also have a solid group of bright shining lights in Congress who are beacons of progressive hope – and among them is one especially bright light who has been standing out, providing potent, common sense leadership on issue after issue. He is Raúl Grijalva, whom I've known and worked with since he was county commissioner a decade ago in Tucson. Yes, Arizona (that hot-button red state with a penchant for hardcore rightwing nutballism) has put an unabashed unrelenting progressive champion in the U.S House.
Raúl is both a legislative strategizer and organizer inside Congress, pushing for good jobs, living wages, development of the green economy, protection of Social Security, Medicare for all, public financing of elections, decentralization of Wall Street power, strong environmental protections and other policies for America's workaday families. He's also had the spine to hold greedy corporations accountable, seek an amendment to overturn "Citizens United," oppose needless wars, fight discrimination and bigotry, and stand forthrightly against his own state's draconian, unconstitutional immigration law.
Because of his smarts, effectiveness, and indomitable spirit, two things have recently come Grijalva's way – one good and one bad. First, the good: his colleagues chose him to co-chair the 80-member Congressional Progressive Caucus. From this post, he's developing a much-needed "inside-outside" strategy, linking CPC's efforts directly to the vibrant ideas, energy, and political force of our grassroots groups. Second – and unsurprisingly – he has earned the ire of the corporate money powers and the crazy crowd, and they are now mounting a multimillion-dollar PR attack to defeat him on November 2.
So, Raúl needs us. He's a guy who consistently stands for us, and I hope you'll join me today in standing for him. I've already sent my own donation to his re-election campaign. I'm not asking you to do anything I won't do. I know that times are tough, but if we all pitch in what we can – $5, $50, or more – we can keep this stout populist leader working for us. Click here to support Raúl.
Supporting Raúl Grijalva is a small way we can a big message to the Wall Street elites, corporate lobbyists, and rightwing front groups. Tell them that we give a damn and won't let them buy every congressional seat. Raúl has widespread popular support in his district, and a strong grassroots organization, so our donations can provide the extra boost he needs to overcome the vitriolic assault upon him.
Please click on this link to send your message and your help. He'll be grateful and so will I.... and so will our democracy. Support Raúl
Thank you!

In a recent commentary, I noted that during the past three decades the Republican Party has been jerked from its historic position of mere conservatism... to right-wingism... to today's kooky crackpotism.

Recently, I found myself humming the Old Beatles song: "Poppy Fields Forever."
Okay, John Lennon's lyric was not about poppies, but strawberries. However, I started humming the song because I was... [read more]
