Friends and Supporters:

Below you'll read a letter from our advisory board member, Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org. As you may have heard, that organization, together with allies like Friends of the Earth and the Texas Drought Project, is organizing a "GLOBAL WORK PARTY" for October 10th, 2010, and we're all calling it "10-10-10" Day. We know that events are already planned in Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio--and others are in the making, just check 350.org for your location and find out details. What if there's nothing listed? You can still get something together--you have plenty of time! It can be as simple as weeding a community garden, or it can be as complex as organizing a South Texas beach clean-up--and all points in between. Just get out there and DO SOMETHING to remind people of their place in this struggle. Take a look at the links below to get started! And don't forget to take pictures and mail them to our address when you're had your event! We love to see what our supporters are doing!

And speaking of fall, don't forget to keep checking our website to see all the events we have planned. There will be conferences on drought and environmental matters in Brenham, Laredo, Waco, Corpus Christi--there will be international forums on climate justice in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio--with representatives of some of the most important international climate justice groups represented on panels--and there will be ongoing reminders that COP-16, the successor to Copenhagen, is taking place in Cancun in late fall.

Get involved with Friends of the Earth and 350.org--and the Texas Drought Project! Your children and grandchildren will thank you!

Thanks,
The Texas Drought Project

As we dust off the rubble of the now defunct climate debate in Congress, it seems necessary to take a moment to step back and ponder where we go from here. Devastating floods in Pakistan are affecting more than 14 million people, and record temperatures in Russia have doubled the death rate in Moscow. Yet this summer, U.S. senators in the pocket of corporate polluters punted on taking action to address the climate crisis.
But come October 10, we'll be celebrating climate solutions. Will you join us by organizing an event for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party in your community?

What's a work party? The concept of a work party derives from global traditions including the Minga in the Andes, the Sarvodaya movement of Sri Lanka, and the barn raisings of Amish people. All of these cultures have in common the notion of bringing people together for a day of collective work to complete a project that will benefit the whole community. These traditions are followed by a fun event involving food and music to celebrate the accomplishment.
For 10/10/10 (October 10, 2010), you can organize a community-engaging tree planting, arrange a bike ride to demonstrate the need for improved infrastructure for alternative modes of transportation, or work on a small-scale, local, organic farm to hasten the transition away from industrial agriculture. For more ideas, click here.

Are you ready to put on your own minga or barn raising? Click here to join a global network of 10/10/10 organizers from 350.org and allied groups and get 350.org's easy 10 Step Organizing Guide.

Every day, people ask us, "What's the single best way to solve the climate crisis?" The truth is, there is no silver bullet to halting the spill of carbon into our atmosphere, no single technological solution to reversing the damage wrought by extreme and catastrophic weather. We don't just need solar power, or wind power, or efficiency. We need all of these things and more. Most importantly, we need a diverse movement carrying out these diverse solutions.
And that movement starts with you. We're asking you to complete a sustainability project that will benefit your entire community and help make reducing climate-disrupting emissions tangible -- and fun -- for everyone! By organizing one of these projects, you'll also demonstrate to Congress that you, your friends, and your neighbors are part of the climate movement -- that grassroots support for climate solutions is tangible and growing.

Calling all mobilizers, rabble-rousers, musicians, artists, and community change-makers: our movement needs everybody. Please sign up to be an organizer today.
