Public meetings in the US: The political significance of the revolution in
Egypt
Over the past week, the entire world has been rocked by extraordinary
developments in the Middle East and North Africa.
Almost overnight, the self-immolation of a young Tunisian worker--in protest
over high unemployment and desperate social conditions--sparked mass
demonstrations that forced Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the US-backed Tunisian
dictator in power for 23 years, to flee the country. Mass demonstrations
swept through the entire region, culminating in the outpouring of millions
in Egypt against another US-backed dictator, Hosni Mubarak, who has ruled
the country through torture and repression for 30 years.
How is it that such apparently stable regimes have been shaken to their core
so quickly? What lessons do these events hold for workers and young people
in every country, including the United States, where conditions of
unemployment and inequality are no less severe than in Egypt and Tunisia?
And, with the world looking on in horror as the masses of Egypt face bloody
repression, what program and perspective is needed to carry the struggle
forward?
These public meetings, sponsored by the Socialist Equality Party and the
International Students for Social Equality, will address the social causes
and political consequences of the revolutionary upheavals in Egypt and the
Middle East.
