Statewide newspapers support it. Local governments across the  state 
support it. Now is the time for our state legislators in  Austin to follow through 
and make it happen. Bipartisan  legislation has been introduced to rein in 
abusive payday and auto  title lending in Texas.  
This bill will close a legal loophole that payday and auto  title lenders 
have found, allowing them to ignore Texas'  constitutional lending cap and 
other borrower safeguards put in  place by the Legislature. As a result, loans 
of up to 500% APR are  being made to hundreds of thousands of Texans. A 
recent survey  found that 1 in 5 payday loan borrowers in Texas were age 50 or  
older.  
The bill will be heard in a State Senate committee as early as  next week.
