I wanted to pass this on from the Amnesty international list;

I'd like to mention one event happening next week that people in the group
might be interested in.

Glenn Greenwald, author of three (soon to be four) books and blogger for
Salon.com, will be doing a public speaking event at Lonestar College in
Kingwood. For those who don't recognize the name, Greenwald is a former
constitutional lawyer turned civil rights author, blogger and journalist, and
he's one of the most important liberal voices in America. If you already
regularly read him _online_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/index.html) , then you likely know about this event. But if you don't, you
might still want to come to the free event because I'm sure you'll learn
something you never knew before (if you like that sort of thing).

The topic of his lecture is "Shredding the Constitution, Civil Liberties
and the War on Terror," and it's at 7 PM on Wednesday, March 9th in the
teaching theater CLA 114.

Here's the flyer:

(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/03/01/assange/glenngreenwald_theiss.pdf) Greenwald regularly writes about civil rights (which,
as we all know, in many ways overlaps with human rights), and has probably
done more than anyone in the news media to bring attention to the
mistreatment (torture) of Bradley Manning at the Marine brig in Quantico, Va..
Bradley Manning is the former intelligence analyst accused of leaking 150,000+
sensitive diplomatic cables, as well as the _Collateral Murder video_
(http://www.collateralmurder.com/) to the open government organization
_Wikileaks_ (http://213.251.145.96/) , who has now spent over 10 months in solitary
confinement as he awaits trial. See Greenwald's _post_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/03/04/morrell/index.html) today for
the latest on that.

Greenwald has also written extensively on Guantanamo Bay and torture. See
for example, _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/02/04/guantanamo) , _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/08/11/khadr) , _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/07/16/sociopaths) , _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/06/26/guantanamo) , _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/07/16/nyt) , _here_
(http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/10/15/accountability) , etc.

I don't know if Greenwald will be saying anything about Manning,
Guantanamo, or torture at the event, but it is highly likely some of these subjects
will come up. A lot of his pet topics are directly and indirectly related
to human rights, so I believe his discussion will be relevant to this
groups' interests. It's very rare for someone like him to visit Texas (for the
record, he lives in Brazil), so it's like a once in a life time
opportunity!*

Thanks,
Brett

*Since I've been reading him for 3+ years, he's never had a public
speaking event in Texas. Usually he sticks to Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and
New York, NY. So this really might be a once in a lifetime opportunity given
he lives in Brazil and it's very costly for him to travel.
