[PAA-Discuss] Ron Paul on Obama's Attack on Libya

While I am sick and outraged at Ghaddafi's (don't you just love a name you
can spell almost any way you want to?) attacks on his people, I am also sick
over the fact that the only solution this country ever has to offer in
response to any humanitarian disaster, be it of natural or human origin, is
lethal force, or the threat of it. We sent armed troops to Haiti after the
earthquake, for god's sake.

The same compassionate and moral instinct that makes many of us opposed to
war also presents us with a painful dilemma when we see a bully attacking
vulnerable people. We want it to stop, and we want to MAKE it stop. It is
the ultimate test of our commitment to nonviolent solutions to human
problems.

I think of my training and some of the work I've done in dealing with
domestic violence, and in those situations, one has the same instincts. You
know a woman or child who is being abused, and you want to go over and kick
the guy's balls up between his ears. But that is NOT what you do. You work
with the person who is being abused in any way you can to empower them to
take care of the situation. Intervention can blow up on your face in some
nasty ways, and put everyone at further risk.

Yeah, fucking for chastity hasn't restored anyone's virginity, and armed
"peacekeeping" missions have only ever ended up escalating the violence and
costing more lives.

We need to reacquaint ourselves with the Westphalian principles that are
supposedly the guiding spirit of international law. If you are not familiar
with the principles that sprang from the ratification of the Treaty of
Westphalia in 1648, think of the Prime Directive. Westphalian principles
were the model for it. Such a policy might actually ensure that we have
friends, rather than enemies, and a country in which our citizens truly do
experience liberty, equality, and prosperity.
