A couple of summers ago, between the health care debate and the antics of some of the more virulent anti-immigrant groups and personalities, my inbox became a battlefield. I finally got tired of being called ugly names in all-caps by both libertarians whose ideology would put me and others with disabilities out on an ice floe to die, and those who wanted to scapegoat immigrants.
I still tend to put up and try to reason with Ron Paul's social Darwinists, hoping they will come to have hearts, and an understanding of our interconnectedness as human beings. However, I told the nativists that anyone who used the word "illegal" to describe living human beings would be blocked, and I ended up with a lot less offensive spam in my inbox. One of the things that really burns me up is hearing some Anglo complain about going to the ER and having to wait in line behind people they somehow know are here without documentation, using resources that should belong to citizens. For one thing, medical ethics actually do call for medical personnel to treat the sick regardless of nationality, ideology, race, or ethnic background. For another, triage is not about choosing the people you like best to treat first, but the people whose conditions need the most immediate attention. And finally, how did they know these people had not done their paperwork? Because they were brown? Excuse me while my head blows up here.Bart, thanks for sending this. You see how it touches a nerve with me. I am so sick of our ruling class having such success with scapegoating, and citizens falling for it. That is precisely what is going on with the immigration situation. And this is precisely why we, the people, do not have any power, and do not own our government. We're letting those in charge continue to divide us. Peace and solidarity,Beth

Last night during the Republican presidential debate at the Reagan Library, we were shocked. And this time, it wasn't by something one of the candidates said.
During a commercial break, we saw a new ad by an organization called "Californians for Population Stabilization." Now, we're used to ads criticizing undocumented immigration and chest-pounding about a border fence, but this political ad was different. This one called for an end to legal immigration.
This political ad attacked all immigrants. We need your help now to respond to these sorts of attacks. Will you donate $25 or more right now to fight back?
This political ad argued that all immigrants hurt our economy and take jobs away from hard-working Americans. As study after study has shown, this is just flatly untrue.
And what's more, this ad was run during a debate at the Reagan Library, named for President Reagan, a man who, in 1986, signed a pathway to citizenship into law for undocumented immigrants.
Ronald Reagan once recalled a letter he received from a constituent: "He wrote that you can go to live in France, but you cant become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Italy, but you cant become a German, an Italian. He went through Turkey, Greece, Japan and other countries. But he said anyone, from any corner of the world, can come to live in the United States and become an American."
That's as true today as it was then.
Last night's political ad was a sad, desperate attempt to divide Americans from one another. Our country deserves so much better than that. We're all Americans, we all deserve respect, and we need to stand up for one another when groups of citizens are being ostracized.
Will you stand up for legal immigrants? Donate $25 or more now, and help us fight back.
Thank you,
Immigrants' List
