New Deal Numerology: Speech Impediments
by Senior Staff Writer Tim Price
This week's numbers: $300 billion; $50 billion; $100 billion; 47%; 53%; 13%
$300 billion... is an opening number. That's the estimated cost of the jobs
plan the president will propose tonight. By the time it gets through
Congress, every American will receive a letter from Obama apologizing for
his socialism.
$50 billion... is a 99er's number. That's the cost of the unemployment
benefits extension included in the plan. Republicans argue that it's silly
to give money to people who have no jobs when it could be going to
corporations that create no jobs.
$100 billion... is an invested number. That's how much funding would go
toward infrastructure. Of course we wouldn't need all these newfangled
highways and tunnels if more people would travel by private jet like real
Americans.
47%... is a building number. That's how many Americans support more
infrastructure spending, while only 26% oppose it. The GOP needs to come up
with a more negative term, like "death bridges" or "public don't-works."
53%... is a waning number. According to an ABC/WaPo poll, that's how many
Americans disapprove of Obama's job performance. That means there's a lot
riding on tonight's speech, even if his opponents are busy competing to see
whose red rubber nose honks the loudest.
13%... is a disgusted number. That's how many Americans approved of
Congress's job performance in a recent NBC/WSJ poll. But House Republicans
are determined to improve their tarnished image, right after they walk out
on a presidential address to go watch football.

Quote of the Week
"To those who say that our expenditures for Public Works and other means for
recovery are a waste that we cannot afford, I answer that no country,
however rich, can afford the waste of its human resources. Demoralization
caused by vast unemployment is our greatest extravagance." - FDR, Radio
Address, September 30, 1934
