Hi Anne-
Last week, thousands of you raised your voices to protect funding for Planned Parenthood and the critical refugee resettlement program. Your legislators listened. Neither of these harmful provisions made it into the federal spending bill.
The bad news? Two dangerous riders made it onto the bill. One violates your privacy by deputizing corporations to hand over your data to the government under the guise of protecting cybersecurity. The other codifies discrimination through the visa waiver program for travel to the U.S.
These riders threaten our hard-won privacy rights and enshrine discrimination. Tell Congress to oppose these reckless riders and protect our liberties.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/echbaRYBoQAZPhHBHmEQKwaCTGaDXU4taaaaB1PyBLHD1Saa?n=8@1AuDx&l=YyXllwbyb0@x8_avmtTpe.jht&e=j&q=&y=QeSN%25vAvMQezU5KdVNy0P%25vAvMuK2MK2806HRWwO7kcOuZJeathK%25vAvM6sAs6~FoAA2qbEukbnseO2TfM3RXpM%25vAvMLN2z5Bl1M%259y96kTV79ZoV9TRtZUzS9KeS11S0rub0qLfReeIllP5Tiwz8KxxaTB7D0htsc11br%25vAvMkBdW%25vAvMEHbvm0RVSIDC~KviIv9qP-TkeXDbsiWkISLyE5si6PqahhlkgqI~WSgAYcto%25vAvIWSv7A7CbuzE15lrKas6Nwza0XbL8l8DH-XIZk%259y9-I6E7h2%259y96y~mDXnroa-7icCVt4IH%25vAwK%25vAwK>
The surveillance rider will allow companies to share massive amounts of your private information and communications with government agencies, including the FBI and NSA. This is just another way for the government to continue to collect your personal data under the guise of protecting cybersecurity. Your information could be used for criminal prosecutions that have nothing to do with cybersecurity, including targeting whistleblowers under the Espionage Act.
The visa waiver program rider is rank discrimination dressed up as counter-terrorism policy. It would strip away visa-free travel privileges for certain dual nationals of visa waiver program countries based on their nationality and parentage. This includes dual nationals born to Iranian, Syrian, Sudanese, or Iraqi fathers, even if they have never set foot inside those countries. The new law will create two tiers of citizens in these countries: those who can continue to travel to the U.S. visa-free and those who can't because they're dual nationals of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria. That's discrimination, pure and simple. What's to stop other countries from treating American citizens in this way?
Tell your representatives that they can't take away our rights for measures that not only won't make us safer but will damage our individual liberties and our relationships with other nations.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/echbaRYBoQAZPhHBHmEQKwaCTGaDXU4taaaaB1PyBLHD1Saa?n=8@1AuDx&l=YyXllwbyb0@x8_avmtTpe.jht&e=k&q=&y=QeSN%25vAvMQezU5KdVNy0P%25vAvMuK2MK2806HRWwO7kcOuZJeathK%25vAvM6sAs6~FoAA2qbEukbnseO2TfM3RXpM%25vAvMLN2z5Bl1M%259y96kTV79ZoV9TRtZUzS9KeS11S0rub0qLfReeIllP5Tiwz8KxxaTB7D0htsc11br%25vAvMkBdW%25vAvMEHbvm0RVSIDC~KviIv9qP-TkeXDbsiWkISLyE5si6PqahhlkgqI~WSgAYcto%25vAvIWSv7A7CbuzE15lrKas6Nwza0XbL8l8DH-XIZk%259y9-I6E7h2%259y96y~mDXnroa-7icCVt4IH%25vAwK%25vAwK>
Extremists in Congress are hoping we won't notice that this bill would erode our privacy and open the door to discrimination. Frankly, I'm worried about where these riders would take us if passed. The international backlash to the visa waver program changes has already begun, with the European Union objecting to the bill. And the surveillance rider opens up new avenues for the government to obtain and use your data.
Sneaking damaging and discriminatory riders into a must-pass bill usurps the democratic process and is irresponsible. Tell Congress that sacrificing our liberties is too high a price to pay for a 'yes' vote.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/echbaRYBoQAZPhHBHmEQKwaCTGaDXU4taaaaB1PyBLHD1Saa?n=8@1AuDx&l=YyXllwbyb0@x8_avmtTpe.jht&e=l&q=&y=QeSN%25vAvMQezU5KdVNy0P%25vAvMuK2MK2806HRWwO7kcOuZJeathK%25vAvM6sAs6~FoAA2qbEukbnseO2TfM3RXpM%25vAvMLN2z5Bl1M%259y96kTV79ZoV9TRtZUzS9KeS11S0rub0qLfReeIllP5Tiwz8KxxaTB7D0htsc11br%25vAvMkBdW%25vAvMEHbvm0RVSIDC~KviIv9qP-TkeXDbsiWkISLyE5si6PqahhlkgqI~WSgAYcto%25vAvIWSv7A7CbuzE15lrKas6Nwza0XbL8l8DH-XIZk%259y9-I6E7h2%259y96y~mDXnroa-7icCVt4IH%25vAwK%25vAwK>
Thanks, again, for speaking up and letting our leaders know what matters to us.
