Also, if you are tempted to indulge in the holiday buying frenzy, please consider
where you make your purchases. There are a bunch of web sites that
can help you avoid giving your money to the worst businesses, and help you find
ones that are more progressive. See our page of links on consumer issues
at http://www.paa-tx.org/links/08
(Other links can be found by clicking on the Links tab at the top of any page
on our web site.) Let me know if you have updates for that list.

WHEN?
WHY?
To practice simplicity and provide an alternative to media-driven consumerism

WHAT?
The Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without
using common currency. We then have a chance to think in a new way about the
way we place value on objects and services within our community.

We will also share a meal of left-overs from Thanksgiving feasts.

HOW can you get involved?
Just come. Bring a table, shelf, rug or blanket to display
your goods or a sign that describes your service(s). Bring some food to share,
if you wish.
Weather permitting; we will have most of the displays outdoors. Limited space
is available inside the “Little House”. In case of inclement
weather, we can place tables under the large eaves of the Meeting House, but we
will not have access to the inside of the building.
Last year many who participated enjoyed the experience and expressed an
interest in creating events like this more often in Houston, so come and experience it for
yourself.

CHILDREN are WELCOME!
Just like last year, there will be a designated area for
“free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.
Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.
Children are often the best models of how this can work. They have the ability
to add value to an item by describing potential uses.
We will accept monetary donations to Live Oak Friends Meeting House for the use
of their space, however no money will be exchanged for services or goods. The
purpose of this event is to challenge those who choose to participate to NOT
SHOP or BUY anything on this day after Thanksgiving.
