I think the intent of the Department of Peace is to bring about change through education, not at the end of a bayonet. Of course, all good intents of government can be twisted by people with anti-social tendencies. But the alternative to government is a void into which corporations or other wealthy, powerful entities will step. At the turn of the century, sewage flowed through the streets and children were virtual slaves in factories because government was less proactive than it was in the 1930s and 1970s. What is required is not a new ideology but more constant, thoughtful participation in a sustainable way of life.

Rick and Stewart say that the only way to solve current problems is "to shoot the bastards." I'll be looking for their names in the news but I won't hold my breath. Asking people to give up their assault rifles actually seems to me a good first step toward shedding our war culture.

Out-Orwelling Orwell.

A Bill to Create A "Department of Peace and Nonviolence. "
By Stewart Rhodes

> There is now a bill being sponsored that will create a "Department of Peace
> and Nonviolence, " This is Orwellian beyond words. This Deparment of Peace
> and Nonviolence will of course use armed goons to force you to be more
> peaceful and non-violent (see excerpt of text of bill and link below).
>
> What this will really be is a department of thought crime, a department of
> propoganda and "re-education, " and a department of "civilian" disarmament
> and emaciation, meant to finally, fully geld us as a people.
>
> Ah yes, the devil begins to turn round on us all, as the character Sir
> Thomas More, in A Man for All Seasons, said, and what will the
> "conservatives" do now with the constitutional limits on power now being all
> flat at the hands of their hero, Bush? Now that Democrats control
> Congress, we will see the war on terror and the uber national security state
> that was grossly expanded by the neocons morphed into the socialist wet
> dream of many "leading" Democrats - to create a domestic counterpart to all
> of the U.N. "peace" and disarmament orgs, taking a cue from Bush,
> sidestepping the Bill of Rights through the ever-wideing, gaping loophole of
> national security, in the hopes of attaining their utopian ideal of an
> actual government monopoly on force, where the people are not jsut disarmed
> but also entirely stripped of any spirit of resistance to "Authority."
>
> Remember, it is a basic socialist tenent that man is infinately maliable,
> that man has no inherit nature, and of course, no inherit rights, and thus
> can be remolded by the socialist revolutionary vanguard into their image of
> what a good, safe, enlightened little serf is, by any means necessary, so
> long as they have sufficient power to shape the people, from cradle to
> grave. And yet, note how the authors of this blatently unconstitutional,
> and violently anti-liberty "act" wrap it up nice and neat in the language of
> the Declaration of Independence. Like true Owellian propoganda ministers,
> they bastardize and twist the words of the Founding generation to support
> their own utopian socialist vision of:
>
> Quote -
> "new thinking wherein we can conceive of peace as not simply being the
> absence of violence, but the active presence of the capacity for a higher
> evolution of the human awareness, of respect, trust, and integrity; wherein
> we all may tap the infinite capabilities of humanity to transform
> consciousness and conditions which impel or compel violence at a personal,
> group, or national level toward developing a new understanding of, and a
> commitment to, compassion and love, in order to create a `shining city on a
> hill', the light of which is the light of nations."
>
> Yep, they are going to transform our entire socieity, from the individual on
> up, reforming you in what you do and say in your relations within your own
> home, what you do and say among friends and co-workers, and elsewhere in
> public, what your kids do and say in school, across the nation from the
> local level to the U.N. command center in New York. And all at the point of
> government bayonets. Pol Pot would be so proud!
>
> Here we go. This will be a wild ride.
>
> When you combine this horrid bill with H.R.1592, "The Local Law Enforcement
> Hate Crimes Prevention Act" and H.R. 984, "The Executive Branch Reform Act,"
> you have a frontal, gloves-off assault on not just the right to bear arms
> and the very act of thinking about self defense and (gasp!) resistance to
> government abuse, but also an assault on the rights of free speech, free
> press, free assembly and association, and the right to petition the
> government for a redress of grievences.
>
> Folks, it is not just morally already past "time," (to shoot the bastards)
> it will soon be past "time" as a practical matter. As Patrick Henry asked,
> "when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will
> it be when we are totally disarmed?"
>
> The only thing left after this will be full-blown domestic application of
> the laws of war against "domestic terrorists," - i.e. anyone who will not
> get on board with the civilian disarmament, rejection of self defense
> band-wagon. That new, extra-constitutiona l power to declare anyone, even a
> citizen, an "enemy combatant" and apply the full force of the U.S. military
> against them will not be used only on Muslim-Americans. No, the new focus
> will soon be on "right wing militias" and others the left considers to be
> their real enemies. I expect that to happen if a Democrat takes the
> Whitehouse.
>
> Stewart Rhodes
>
> (end of commentary, beginning of the insanity of the actual bill).
>
> H.R. 808: Department of Peace and Nonviolence Act
>
> Quote
> To establish a Department of Peace and Nonviolence.
>
> Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United
> States of America in Congress assembled,
>
> SECTION 1. Federal Interagency Committee on Peace and Nonviolence.
>
> TITLE IV--ESTABLISHMENT OF PEACE DAY
>
> Sec. 401. Peace Day.
>
> SEC. 2. FINDINGS.
>
> Congress finds the following:
>
> (1) On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously declared
> the independence of the 13 colonies, and the achievement of peace was
> recognized as one of the highest duties of the new organization of free and
> independent States.
>
> (2) In declaring, `We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are
> created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
> unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
> Happiness', the drafters of the Declaration of Independence, appealing to
> the Supreme Judge of the World, derived the creative cause of nationhood
> from `the Laws of Nature' and the entitlements of `Nature's God', such
> literal referrals in the Declaration of Independence thereby serving to
> celebrate the unity of human thought, natural law, and spiritual causation.
>
> (3) The architects of the Declaration of Independence `with a firm reliance
> on the protection of divine providence' spoke to the connection between the
> original work infusing principle into the structure of a democratic
> government seeking to elevate the condition of humanity, and the activity of
> a higher power which moves to guide the Nation's fortune.
>
> (4) The Constitution of the United States of America, in its Preamble,
> further sets forth the insurance of the cause of peace in stating: `We the
> People of the United States, in Order to Form a more perfect Union,
> establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common
> defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to
> ourselves and our Posterity.'
>
> (5) The Founders of this country gave America a vision of freedom for the
> ages and provided people with a document which gave this Nation the ability
> to adapt to an undreamed of future.
>
> (6) It is the sacred duty of the people of the United States to receive the
> living truths of our founding documents and to think anew to develop
> institutions that permit the unfolding of the highest moral principles in
> this Nation and around the world.
>
> (7) During the course of the 20th century, more than 100,000,000 people
> perished in wars, and now, at the dawn of the 21st century, violence seems
> to be an overarching theme in the world, encompassing personal, group,
> national, and international conflict, extending to the production of
> nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction which have
> been developed for use on land, air, sea, and in space.
>
> ( Such conflict is often taken as a reflection of the human condition
> without questioning whether the structures of thought, word, and deed which
> the people of the United States have inherited are any longer sufficient for
> the maintenance, growth, and survival of the United States and the world.
>
> (9) Promoting a culture of peace has been recognized by the United Nations
> Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through passage
> of a resolution declaring an International Decade for a Culture of Peace and
> Non-Violence for the Children 2001-2010. The objective is to further
> strengthen the global movement for a culture of peace following the
> observance of the International Year for the Culture of Peace in 2000.
>
> (10) We are in a new millennium, and the time has come to review age-old
> challenges with new thinking wherein we can conceive of peace as not simply
> being the absence of violence, but the active presence of the capacity for a
> higher evolution of the human awareness, of respect, trust, and integrity;
> wherein we all may tap the infinite capabilities of humanity to transform
> consciousness and conditions which impel or compel violence at a personal,
> group, or national level toward developing a new understanding of, and a
> commitment to, compassion and love, in order to create a `shining city on a
> hill', the light of which is the light of nations.
> (emphasis added).
>
> Read the rest here:
>
> http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-808
