I used to volunteer in the literacy tutoring program, when they had one...I am pretty sure they don't anymore.

First of all, do you have their inmate number? You have to have that on any communication you send to them. If you don't have it, talk to a member of their family or their attorney, and get it from them. You should address it to "John Doe, TDCJ Inmate Number 123456" and then the unit name and address. You can get that from the prison unit itself.

You can send a letter, you can send a card, don't send anything with staples, don't send anything with stickers. You can send newspaper clippings, but if they are controversial (i.e., political, or have anything to do with criminal justice issues), they won't be delivered, they'll be taken out of the mailing.

You can send books, too, as long as they are sent either from the publisher or from an approved bookstore. And I forgot to mention--if they are on an approved list. It's amazing what is NOT.

They want to make it just as difficult as possible to correspond with friends or loved ones, believe me.

I wish to write someone in prison and want to make sure that they actually
get the letter. I have searched online for any info re: prison letter
writing policies, but no luck, so I am hoping someone may be able to clarify the
issue or even just point me in the right direction.

At the risk of sounding dense, can I send a letter *inside* a card ?
I wanted to send a nice card, but don't have enough room to write everything I
want to say, so I wanted to send both.

Any help would be great appreciated.
