With one of the most significant anniversaries of the Bhopal Disaster approaching, now is the time to ask our friends and families to support us and to support this struggle. The 24th and 25th Anniversaries is an opportunity to celebrate the quarter century of courage in the face of Corporate Crime. It's important to take a moment to celebrate the many momentous triumphs towards justice, and to recognize that we need a lot more support to move this struggle forward. There's a long road ahead, and many victories to come before the struggle for justice in Bhopal is over. We need to ask our friends and families to join in this struggle, and to give to this important movement by donating what they can to the campaign.

One of the best tools we have to celebrate as well as to ask for support is to throw a parties!
Imagine the rumble of enormous trucks day in, and day out, on the road your kids walk along to get to school and do their chores. The sound of chainsaws cutting down the nearby forest you so treasured, waking you in the morning instead of your regular alarm (or the crow of a rooster). Imagine not knowing who it is who is invading your home for months. Workers tromping by, sheds and enormous buildings go up with not a speck of information revealed about what was planned, for what used to be YOUR neighborhood.

This is exactly what Dow did in Shinde village. The villagers thought they would just adapt, but then the unknown builders began drilling huge holes in the earth – deep well injection disposal systems. They knew from other villages that were home to both industry and contaminated water, that waste disposal system, above all else, could destroy their village.

They sought help from NGOs to figure out who was building on their land - and upon finding out it was Dow - began direct action to stop it. You can stand up in support of the courageous villagers by sending a fax to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state today. Ask him to respect the will of the villagers and not allow Dow to resume construction of its polluting facility. Please share this fax action with friends and family.
Make sure Shinde never has to face this problem– send a fax to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra today!

The No More Bhopal Campaign & Dow Quit India movement got started In Salem & after a futile search for Dursban (a Dow product passed by Ministry of Agriculture after raking in huge bribes) for it to be burned in public - we opted for bit more saner measures. On 13th & 14th a No More Bhopal's photo exhibition was held for students of AVS College, Salem. After every batch of 120 to 130 students had a look at the exhibition, we had a session of question & answers. After almost 15 such half an hour sessions & 1800 students reached out to, the students proposed to open a 'No More Bhopal' campaign chapter in their college. The management has readily agreed & I personally felt enthused to take the same strategy to other schools & colleges. Thanks to Gwadu – Mettur for bringing in cans of water from different sources ( river, streams, bore & open wells etc) polluted by Chemplast Sanmar for the students to smell and to Dr.Vijayan for Volunteering all along the first day & lalith for financial support.

Nity, has been spot on right about working with young folks - as the possibilities that exist are 1000 times more encouraging than being depressed with a crowd of grown ups who do not want to be even addressed.

The Salem Steel Plant Saga unfolds a story of absolute neglect of people by the government. In 1972 ,3500 to 4100 acres of land was acquired at Rs.1200/ per acre by the Government to be handed over to Steel Authority of India to open a integrated steel plant. The case for enhanced compensation is pending for the past 36 years in different courts & at different stages. Of the total land only 150 to 250 acres of land has been put to use & the remaining land has been home to prophosis julifera. The displaced people are sure that if the government or the company had put all the land to good use than they would have been given equal opportunity in the industrial progress & would have educated their wards & progressed along with the company.

However, the people, after being deprived of their lands, livelihood & attached to deal with lengthy legal process of the Indian judicial system, have been rewarded with poverty & hopes that have never materialized.

With three false cases & two warrants pending & courts taking up a lot of my time, I am posting a short update …
