It is imperative to remember that GMO foods= =20 are deemed "substantially equivalent" because of a 1992 Executive Order by=20= =20 then-President George Bush, Sr., NOT because of any scientific or =20 epidemiological studies. It is imperative, too, to recall that the genetic= material from=20 these crops and animals enters the genetic material of humans or animals=20 consuming it and mingles in totally uncontrolled ways with all plants once=20= GMO=20 crops are grown outdoors. Once mingled, there is no one on the planet who=20= can=20 say with certainty what the short or long term consequences of that minglin= g=20 will be. All independently conducted science, however, shows, often to th= e=20 surprise of the scientist, devastating health and environmental=20 consequences. =20 Four years ago the FDA promised stricter oversight of GMO plants. None of=20 the oversight promised has occurred and the new rule opens even wider holes= in=20 any regulatory restrictions despite the strong desire of US and global=20 consumers to avoid GMO foods through labeling and selection. The new rule=20= will=20 make that virtually impossible:=20 * Biotech companies will assess their OWN crops to determine whether=20 USDA SHOULD regulate them. Since the criteria are loose, open and subjecti= ve,=20 the outcome is assured: no regulation. * Biotech companies will be able to grow UNTESTED crops without any=20 USDA oversight whatsoever, making, according to the USDA contamination of=20 conventional and organic crops with untested GMO material "more likely". * This contamination does not bother USDA regulators since new rules=20 allow "Low Level Presence" of GMO material in BOTH conventional "organic"=20 food, feed and seed. * Outdoor cultivation of pharmaceutical-producing and industrial=20 material-producing crops is allowed without supervision or restriction. Th= e cross=20 pollination of other plants, weeds, feed and food crops with this material= =20 is assured. The consequences include drugs and industrial chemicals ending= =20 up in our food and animal feed. =20 * The rule virtually assures that the DNA to produce these materials=20 will wind up in our own DNA and that of the animals we eat. Both consumer a= nd=20 food industry groups have urged controls on this practice, but the USDA is=20 determined to ignore that input. =20 * USDA refuses to propose any controls on GMO plants which require or= =20 tolerate high levels of pesticide or herbicide use. Insects and weeds both=20 adapt to the presence of these toxins and become resistant to them. It is imperative to remember that GMO foods= <br> are deemed "substantially equivalent" because of a 1992 Executive= Order by <br> then-President George Bush, Sr., NOT because of any scientific or <br> epidemiological studies. It is imperative, too, to recall that the genetic= material from <br> these crops and animals enters the genetic material of humans or animals <b= r> consuming it and mingles in totally uncontrolled ways with all plants once=20= GMO <br> crops are grown outdoors. Once mingled, there is no one on the planet who=20= can <br> say with certainty what the short or long term consequences of that minglin= g <br> will be. All independently conducted science, however, shows, often to th= e <br> surprise of the scientist, devastating health and environmental <br> consequences. <br> Four years ago the FDA promised stricter oversight of GMO plants. None of <= br> the oversight promised has occurred and the new rule opens even wider holes= in <br> any regulatory restrictions despite the strong desire of US and global <br> consumers to avoid GMO foods through labeling and selection. The new rule=20= will <br> make that virtually impossible: <br> * Biotech companies will assess their OWN crops to determine whether=20= <br> USDA SHOULD regulate them. Since the criteria are loose, open and subjecti= ve, <br> the outcome is assured: no regulation.<br> * Biotech companies will be able to grow UNTESTED crops without any <= br> USDA oversight whatsoever, making, according to the USDA contamination of <= br> conventional and organic crops with untested GMO material "more likely= ".<br> * This contamination does not bother USDA regulators since new rules=20= <br> allow "Low Level Presence" of GMO material in BOTH conventional &= quot;organic" <br> food, feed and seed.<br> * Outdoor cultivation of pharmaceutical-<wbr>producing and industrial= <br> material-producing crops is allowed without supervision or restriction. Th= e cross <br> pollination of other plants, weeds, feed and food crops with this material= <br> is assured.
