Very, very frustrated.

That’s how I felt Friday, when I got a call from the White House telling me they were abandoning the effort to strengthen critical air quality standards for smog pollution. As you know, smog triggers asthma attacks and causes permanent lung damage, and there are approximately 5,000 asthma-related deaths each year in the United States. [1]

Please call the White House today at (202) 456-1111 to let the president know what you think about this.

Make no mistake, this administration has done some great things for our health and the environment. But his decision on Friday is easily the worst environmental decision the president has made. It flies in the face of what EPA’s own scientists have said is necessary to protect public health. Our kids, senior citizens and those with respiratory problems will suffer as a consequence. Certainly they deserve better.

But having taken a couple days to think about it, I realize there is an even bigger problem hurtling toward us. Polluters and their allies in Congress will now smell blood in the water. Especially since last week the House Republican leadership released its list of fall priorities that included attacking this very smog standard. I can only imagine their glee at the president’s decision. And I expect they are gearing up to kill the rest of the programs on their list — including programs that cut toxic mercury pollution from power plants, and that clean up the largest emitters of global warming pollution.

So I’m past wallowing in frustration. I’m getting our campaign up and running as quickly as I can. And I hope you’ll help.

Please call the White House today at (202) 456-1111. Tell whomever answers that you’re disappointed the president will not strengthen the smog standard — and that you’re counting on him to do a better job of standing up for our health, and standing up to the polluters going forward.

Hearing what response you get will help me implement our strategy. So be sure to report your call here and let us know what happened.

Instead of wringing our hands, let’s use them to join together. United, we can stop the polluters. For our kids’ health and for our environment, I urge you to call the White House today at (202) 456-1111. Let President Obama know you’re frustrated with Friday’s decision — and that from here on out you’re counting on him to stand up to the polluters and their allies in Congress whenever they attack our health and environment. Be sure to report your call here.

And as always, thank you for your support.
