In reading the NY Times coverage this morning, I was slightly</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'>incredulous that the entire article was devoted to Perry and Romney. I began to think that the NY Times had decided that Michele Bachmann was no longer</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'>“fit to print,” remarkable development after their incredible devotion to covering here all the way through the Iowa caucuses.</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'> So I flipped on the Fox News lead (online) about the debate, expecting them to continue their love</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'>affair with Bachmann (as expressed by their constant coverage of her).</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'> But no, in a 3:51 broadcast commentary by two of their leading politicos about the debate, they treated it as a two-person debate, beginning by introducing Perry and Romney as the</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif"'>“frontrunners” (I think this is technically untrue; I thought that Bachmann was ahead of Romney in the opinion polls) and then spending the entire coverage without mentioning anyone else. </span><o:p></o:p></p><p style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>This is, I think, highly significant if this pattern (in two media outlets) is generalized to the other key print and</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>electronic corporate media. </span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>This is not uncommon—that certain people or viewpoints fall from grace and simply do not get media coverage, even when they reflect large bodies of public opinion.</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'> Recent examples include anti-war positions (with withdrawal from</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>Afghanistan simply not fit to print in the major media)</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>and Howard Dean after his</span> <span style='font-family:"Tw Cen MT","sans-serif";color:black'>“gaff” during the 2004 presidential campaign.
