Wednesday, February 4, 2009
Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm

Event Description:

As part of its monthly film series, Houston Indymedia will screen 'Gaza Ghetto: Portrait of a Palestinian Family' at 7:00pm, Wednesday, February 4th at Rice Cinema.

Much of the mainstream discourse about the current conflict in Gaza portrays it as an eternal struggle between two groups fighting since biblical times. 'Gaza Ghetto' dispels this myth, examining the impact of displacement on the life of Abu el-Adel and his family through intimate scenes of daily life in Jabalia, the largest Palestinian refugee camp. The film follows them as they return to the site of their former village, now the site of a Jewish settlement inside Israel. As the grandfather and great-grandfather point out an orchard and sycamore fig that used to belong to their family, a Jewish resident emerges and orders them to leave, claiming they need a permit to be at the site. After spending this time with Abu el-Adel and his grandchildren you will understand how the roots of the Palestine-Israel conflict influence today's harsh realities and dreams of peace, justice and stability. 'Gaza Ghetto' is the first documentary film made in Gaza, and sadly all of the themes still seem as excruciatingly relevant 20 years later.

After the film, we will be joined by local Palestinian activists for a discussion about the ongoing crisis.

This event is cosponsored by the Houston Palestine Film Festival and the Houston Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine.

Rice Cinema is located at Rice University, Entrance #8 (University & Stockton). We will be asking for donations at the door, however, no one will be turned away. For more information visit himc.org.
