Event Description:
On Saturday, March 21st, as part of its monthly film series, Houston Indymedia will screen a series of short films on Iraq by Big Noise Films titled “Beyond the Walls: The Battle for Iraq’s Future.” In attendance will be co-founder of Big Noise Films, Rick Rowley.
With over 1 million Iraqi dead, 4 million refugees, 4,000 dead American soldiers and a total cost of 1-4 trillion dollars, the war in Iraq remains the most important fact of American politics, but it has faded from the headlines. The television coverage that still makes the news doesn’t go far beyond US military press releases and Iraqi politicians interviewed inside the Green Zone. Beyond the Walls: The Battle for Iraq's Future is a collection of short films that covers a very different side, from war-torn Falluja, the giant US prison at Umm Qasr, the Mehdi Army stronghold inside Sadr City and other places the mainstream corporate channels can not or will not go.
Rick Rowley has directed several award winning feature documentaries with international theatrical distribution and has reported from the front lines of wars and the inside of social movements in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, East Timor and others. Big Noise's film credits include: This is What Democracy Looks Like, The Fourth World War, Black and Gold, War of 33, The Jena 6 and Zapatista.
8:00pm Saturday, March 21st at Rice Cinema. The Cinema is located at Entrance #8 on the Rice University Campus, located at the corner of University Blvd & Stockton. We will be asking for a $5 to $10 donation at the door, however, no one will be turned away. For more information:

Event Description:
ICE holds immigrant families at the T. Don Hutto family detention center. Before the successful legal action by the ACLU in the fall of 2007, children wore prison garb, and were denied adequate schooling, health care, and recreation. Despite some important improvements made as a result of community organizing, the fight is not over. Hutto remains a medium security prison managed by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), a for-profit adult corrections company. Incarceration of infants and children cannot be allowed-- even with the "privacy curtains around toilets" mandated in the ACLU settlement.
