Event Description:

QUAKER PEACE FESTIVAL TO BUILD HOUSTON PEACE COMMUNITY

Live Oak Friends Meeting will be holding a Quaker Peace Festival on Saturday, November 4, at 1318 W.  26th Street.  The festival will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at sundown. There will be workshops in the morning and afternoon, live music, cooperative games and story telling for children, plus free food.  Many local and some national peace-oriented organizations will be represented. The public, all ages, are invited to attend; admission is free, but donations are always welcomed.

Featured musicians will include Live Oak Players, Million Year Dance, One Like Zen, Hank Woji and DRUM. There will also be dance performances and a drum circle.

Workshops on "Beyond War", "Teaching Peace", and "Give Peace a Dance" will be offered at 10:00 am and again at 2:00 pm.

The roots of Quakerism go back to the 17th century and are based in the belief that there is that of God in everyone. Quakers seek the truth by following Testimonies of Equality, Simplicity, Integrity, Service, and, the most famous, the Peace Testimony whereby Friends believe that war is never an acceptable solution.

Friends have no ordained minister and no creed.  Its founders, George Fox and Margaret Fell, believed in the continuing revelation of the Holy Spirit through the Inner Light.   A popular Quaker refrain is, "Let your life speak!" So you'll often see Friends serving as teachers, health care workers, social workers, and peace workers or volunteering in the prisons.  Friends meet for silent worship Sundays at 8:30 and 10:30 am.

The Live Oak Friends Meeting house contains the famous Sky Space, an art installation using natural and artificial lighting by the well-known Quaker artist James Turrell.  It can be viewed every Friday evening half an hour before sunset.  Docents are always on hand to guide and answer questions about the art installation.  Thousands of people from around the world have come to witness the Sky Space and to find respite in the elegant simplicity of the meeting house.

The Quaker Peace Festival will end with a meditation under the open Sky Space, weather permitting.
