Execution vigil and action

Jul 24 2007 - 5:30pm
Jul 24 2007 - 8:00pm

Event Description:

The 100th execution from Harris County since 1982 is scheduled for this evening.

Lonnie Johnson will be killed in Huntsville shortly after 6 PM. Two separate gatherings in Houston will mark this event: A vigil and a protest. There will be a vigil 5:30-6:20 PM at St. Anne's Catholic Community, corner of Shepherd and Westheimer. Parking is available off Westheimer just west of Shepherd. Please participate and bring your friends with you. There is hope for a stay because of prosecutorial misconduct. You may call Burnham Terrell at 713-921-0948 until 5:00 on Tuesday to find out what has developed.

Afterward and separately planned, a press conference and protest will begin at 7:00 PM near the intersection of Hillcroft and Richmond. The exact address is 7723 Pagewood, at the home of Charles Rosenthal, District Attorney of Harris County (three blocks south of Richmond, two blocks west of Hillcroft).

Please also note that if executions continue as scheduled, on August 22, Johnny Connor will be the 400th person since resumption of the death penalty. Texas also has three executions scheduled for three consecutive days at the end of August, culminating with the killing of Kenneth Foster, convicted under the law of parties for being in the vicinity of a murder for which another man has already been executed, a man who said before dying that Kenneth Foster had nothing to do with the murder.
