May 1 2009 - 7:30pm
May 1 2009 - 10:00pm

Event Description:

Houston Indymedia is proud to present local filmmaker Jesse Salmeron as we screen his latest film "This is America" as part of our monthly film series.  This special May Day screening will begin at 7:30pm, Saturday, May 1st at Rice Cinema.

"This is America" is a film about a family torn apart by deportation.  The story revolves around a single undocumented mother and her two sons.  The story is set into motion when the mother is arrested during an immigration raid on her workplace.  The gifted older son, Jose, must abandon his college dreams and return home to care for his younger brother and attempt to salvage what's left of their family after their mother’s deportation.  The film depicts the emotional destruction that is the aftermath of an immigration raid.

After the film, we will be joined by the director Jesse Salmeron for a discussion about his film and the human cost of the current immigration policy.

Rice Cinema is located at Rice University, Entrance #8 (University & Stockton).  We will be asking for a $5-$10 donation at the door, however, no one will be turned away.
