Good point. Weren't presidents originally only given Veto power? Anyone
know? So they could only prevent laws from getting passed, but were
never supposed to help them get passed. (Our Founders predicted bloated
government would trample on human rights).
If this is the case, then bills don't need to be signed into law by a
president. The legislative branch has the exclusive authority to make
(and REPEAL) laws all by itself. The judicial branch should interpret them
(according to the CONSTITUTION, that is), and the executive branch, headed
by the president, is merely to enforce the laws that exist. It's not
supposed to invent so-called "laws" out of thin air such as signing
statements. (Or "arrest" people for exercising a Right - like Free Speech,
for instance - something executive branch members such as law enforcement
have a tendency to do).
A signing statement is therefore not a true law, so should not be enforced.
To issue a signing statement is to admit that one is ignoring one's
constituency - the American people - and merely making decrees -- just like
any monarch would do.
Alyssa, what kind of involuntary servitude did the CO's have to perform?
I'm wondering if it was war related.

AND...
NO SIGNING STATEMENTS that absolve the President from abiding by the laws.
If the laws are good enough for citizens, they should be good enough for our
pseudo KINGS.

I am sure there is law regarding slavery, involuntary servitude, and
the draft,
After WW-II ended, these C.O.'s were NOT released from the camp. .
This was indeed, involuntary servitude, and for what possible purpose other
than punishing these men for opposing war. I don't hear much about this
occurrence in U.S. history, it's been shoved under the rug.
