Texans for Peace presents it third annual "Teaching Peace in Texas Schools" conference. Workshops include "Teaching empathy through exercises in the math and science curricula," "Creating a culture of peace in the schools," "Encouraging student activism," "Working it out; empowering elementary school students to resolve their own conflicts," "Nonviolent communication in the schools," and "Peaceful vocations; a guide to counter-recruiting in our schools." Keynote speaker is noted author Jan Arnow, founder of the Louisville Kentucky-based Intercultural Institute and longtime proponent of nonviolent communication techniques in education.

Kerry Max Cook is an innocent man who wrongly served two decades in Texas’s notorious death house for the brutal 1977 rape and murder of 21-year-old Linda Jo Edwards. Cook’s struggle for freedom is said to be one of the worst cases of police and prosecutorial misconduct in American history.

On Friday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. Artist Rescue Mission (ARM) and the Station Museum initiate Project Iraq with the film Iraq in Fragments.
Project Iraq is a yearlong project to raise awareness about Iraqi art and culture, and to render assistance to artists affected by the war. Presentations about the project will be made by artist Gertrude Barnstone and Jame Harithas. The evening features the film Iraq in Fragments, a film of modern day Iraq told by Iraqis living in war and occupation, nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary, and winner of the Sundance Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography. Cindy Sheehan will receive the National Peacemaker Award and deliver the main address at the Houston Peace and Justice Center's fifth annual Awards Dinner. In addition, HPJC will honor Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis, the Houston Area Women's Center, and Urban Harvest's founder and long-time director Bob Randall.

Event Description:
The Quaker Peace Festival "Living in Peace" is November 10th. It is an all day event, lasting until sundown. The day will start with a walking meditation and a brief presentation "Goldwater Conservative to War Abolitionist" from Edward O'Rouke. There will be kids games and activities, live music (rock, folk, world beat/reggae, and hip-hop). We are inviting many organizations, groups and vendors who work to improve and educate the community and show how peace can be incorporated into our lives. We will have a dance performance by Revolve Dance Company. Then we will end the day with a break dance competition inside under the skyspace.
