Submitted by PAAMember on December 8, 2005 - 3:00am. ::

Below are two events I'm highlighting this week. More are on the
various online calendars which you may easily get locate from the PAA
home page (upper right corner) at
http://www.progressiveactionalliance.org/

Thanks to all of you who participated in Monday's protest at the
Cheney-DeLay fund raiser. There are pictures and stories posted on
http://houston.indymedia.org/ and on the PAA web site home page and
at http://www.paa-tx.org/node/973 . More pictures are in the PAA
photo gallery, (which needs more additions!) -- click on the
"Gallery" link at the top of each page on our web site. There was
also coverage on national sites, including:

http://michaelmoore.com/http://michaelmoore.com/
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/120605C.shtml

If you have photos or stories from the protest, please post them to
Houston Indymedia, or let me know what you have (tell me before
sending photos) if you'd like us to put them on the PAA web site.

Sat. Dec. 10: Runoff election - Houston city council, HISD trustees

Candidates for Houston city council (Districts B, C, and at-large
Position 2), for HISD trustees (Districts I and IX), and for state
rep. district 143 are in the runoff election Saturday. If you didn't
vote early, and live in one of those areas (including anywhere in the
city for city council at large position 2), please don't forget to
vote. Each vote makes a big difference in runoff elections, where so
few others bother to vote at all.

For a sample ballot or to find your voting location if you are in
Harris Co. (sometimes voting sites change), see
http://www.harrisvotes.com

There are some good candidates worthy of support. Helping a
candidate by volunteering a few hours at the polls, or to call voters
beforehand, can make a big difference, especially in an election like
this where turnout will be very light. If you have a favorite
candidate, tell us who he/she is and why on our discussion list at
. If you'd like to know my favorites, let me know
and I'll tell you who I'm supporting.

Helping a candidate, and making sure they know you are with PAA (or
whatever other group you want to affiliate with) does a lot in
building alliances that can help us in the future, too.

If you're not helping a candidate outside of the polls, but would
like to help make sure democracy works while earning a little money,
you can be a poll worker. It's an easy job on quiet election days as
this one will be (but the day is long). There should be plenty of
time for you to catch up on reading, between voters. Barbara Ashley
(of PAA) is one of the election judges in our group who needs poll
workers. If you can help, please call her at 832-693-9279.
