KPFA on the Air

Before there was "public radio," KPFA presented voices and sounds found nowhere else on the radio dial. The brainchild of poets, pacifists and utopian dreamers, the station went live in 1949 with content so valuable that 39 listeners were willing to pay for it, making KPFA the first listener-sponsored radio station in the world. Five decades later, 10,000 supporters took to the streets when news spread of the station's possible sale. With free speech and democracy at its core, Pacifica remains founder Lewis Hill's dream of "a real place, only a few steps up from the street... an integrating aspect of the community."

Would you have joined the KPFA family in the early days?

KPFA On the Air pays tribute to the oldest and most ambitious independent, community-based media in the world, KPFA radio. Novelist Alice Walker narrates the vibrant and stormy history of the first listener-sponsored station. KPFA On the Air is a case study of the pitfalls and possibilities confronting any experiment in media democracy.
