Activism, Committee Action Group reports, Discussion/Updates

  • Book Exchange: Charlie Mauch proposes we explore the book exchange system Carole Keene participates in; he’ll find out more and report back via email
  • Election Updates: Democrat Ciro wins District 23 special election against Henry Bonilla; South Dakota US senator recovering from aneurysm
  • Southern Human Rights Organizers Conference – Black & Brown Unite; great conference and opportunity to network; Bill got permission to have PAA and KPFT tables; lot’s of material that drew crowd; Angela Davis gave powerful plenary talk; other talks and workshops great; discussion about comfort/discomfort attending conference as white minority amongst people of color; Jaribu Hill (conference coordinator) brought incredible energy/spirit
  • “We are the dream” Silent March Saturday, Jan. 13 scheduled as antidote to highly militarized MLK March  planned for following Monday, Jan. 15; Veterans for Peace participating in the 13th parade;  consensus to participate in 13th march; proposal & consensus to create flier for distribution at MLK parade with both PAA and HCGP coordinating the flier and identified as sponsored;  Proposal and consensus to create and circulate impeachment petition at parade; check out WeAreTheDream.org to register; MLK Blvd, staging at Beekman culminating at MacGregor Park
  • Flier committee: Don Cook; Ivan Espinoza, Lee Demers; Bill Crosier; Nebeil al-Odoubi ; Don Cook
  • 3000th military casualty and civilian loss of life memorial Jan 14-21 – consensus to participate and host one of the evening memorials
  • Impeach Petition Committee:  Doc Cook; I van; Willie; Lee D; Bob C; Art B; Joseph Kaye; Bill Crosier; Ron & Kris Graham
  • Consensus to hold next meeting Thursday, Jan. 11, at The Havens Center, 1827 W. Alabama between Shepherd and Dunlavy; parking across the street and at St. Stephen’s Church; Costs: $25 has large room with tables and chairs and kitchen; Aleithia to explore other venues on West side for subsequent meetings
  • Motion to suspend goals & objectives part of agenda until next month’s meeting, Thursday, Jan 11 at The Havens subject to some discussion by folk who came to meeting to discuss 2007 goals and objectives; Motion passed
  • Discussion about outreach to representatives who voted against Military Commissions Act (33 senators one of whom was a republican and 100 plus representatives only 7 of which ;
  • Next Fourth Friday Flicks Dec. 22 “It’s Worse than You Think” at The Havens
  • Proposal to film freeway blogging; last week response’s seemed to mark a new high in positive response (e.g. 3 high school kids joined group;  car passengers returned to bridge to participate)
  • To be discussed at next meeting: Ending Iraq Occupation; Promoting Peace; Impeachment; Networking to build a stronger progressive alliance; Other goals
  • Motion passed to extend meeting for additional 15 minutes to discuss Kucinich campaign
  • Proposal made and consensus reached to create planning committee;  decided to discuss some planning after Dec. 22  movie night; check out Kucinich.tv to see speeches; animated discussion about 2008 Kucinich campaign; his position on issues; his electability; how to counter media’s studied refusal to cover DK while foisting the candidacies of Clinton and Obama on public; we are the ones we’ve been waiting for;
  • Announcements: Aleithia needs help publishing a 3000 word article on Houston air, whose monitoring it; GreenWatch show will feature Bill Crosier; Maria Jimenez; Jenifer Poole; Attend next Harris County Green Party meeting next 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18 at Central Market located at corner of Westheimer and Weslayen
